I bought an MTH scale gp40-2 in 2016. I was supposed to get 2 scale wheeled diesels with different numbers but instead received 1 scale & 1 3 rail with the same diesel number. I had the 3 rail changed to 2 rail, but was told by Mr.Muffins Trains, that in a lash up the same diesel number wouldn't make any difference as long as I changed the cab number. I think I was given bad info.,but can someone set me straight on what's required for a successful lashup on these 2 diesels? I specifically ordered 2 scale wheel diesels, but, well that's immaterial now.

Thanks to all for your inputs.

As Always,

Al Hummel

First reprogram one unit to a different cab number, it does not matter what is on the cab.   What is programmed into the decoder is what counts.

Then if you have digitrax enter the first loco in the right hand throttle and the second in the left hand throttle.   Hit the MU button (for multiple units) and it will ask "Y or N".   Press the Y button and they are consisted.

Actually, if they are both programmed ot the same cab number, they should both respond at the same hence, they will act like MUed.

Under DCS, there's nothing "special" to do. Just add both engines to the DCS Remote (and/or the DCS App) and build a lashup. If you want them to have different descriptions in the DCS Remote (and/or in the DCS APP), simply give one a Custom Name.

In a DCC operation, when you program the engine, you just make sure you give one of the engines a different DCC ID number. The systems  (DCS and DCC) don't care what paint is on the cab. MTH codes the cab numbers in the engine "name" for DCS purposes, but that can be edited to something else (I have three engines I changed the numbers on) which would apply to DCC when you add the engine to the system. After that, you should be able to consist the engines normally.

Because maybe MTH engines also respond to DCC.

You're making an assumption, since only MTH PS3 engines run under DCC. The OP never mentioned PS3 or DCC, only MTH, so why interject DCC into the thread? It only served to muddy the waters.

I'm hoping it hasn't confused the OP, since he has yet to respond to any of the replies.

Al,

If the diesels have same code how will the DCS separate the 2 engines?

When a PS2 or PS3 engine is added to a DCS Remote, DCS is able to identify the engine based upon several factors, which go beyond the engine's name on it's PS2 or PS3 board.

Further, if you ever do encounter an issue when attempting to add two or more identical engines to a DCS Remote (or a DCS Application), use the following workaround, which appears on page 175 of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition and also on page 191 of The DCS WiFi Companion 2nd Edition:

Fortunately, there's a way around this problem. Proceed as follows:

  • Delete from the DCS Remote all occurrences of any engines that DCS may suspect are identical to an engine to be added.
  • Add the first of these DCS engines to the DCS Remote and then do a Factory Reset on it. This will also delete it from the DCS Remote.
  • Repeat the previous step for all of the other DCS engines that DCS may consider to be identical to the first one.
  • Add the first of the DCS engines again. Regardless of what DCS ID# the DCS engine is assigned when it adds, change the DCS ID# to something else.
  • Repeat the previous step for all of the other DCS engines.

Barry: Currently I am not running any trains as I just moved into a new home and just starting the benchwork for a new layout. I run into a problem where I have to Premier GG1's (20-5517-1 CAB #4913 & 20-5580-1 CAB #4801) that both load as the same cab number and cancel the other one out when I loaded the second one. I had them reset by a service tech here in PA and the problem still exists. Also nether one will run any faster than bout 10 MPH. Any suggestions? I have The DCS O Gauge Companion, 2nd Edition. Will upgrade to WiFi at a later date.

Rick,

Most likely a battery problem on these PS2 engines. Engines won't retain their ID# and the reset won't take if the batteries are low or dead. Cab numbers have nothing to do with it, trust me.

You can cut transformer power (not the shut down on the DCS remote) and see if the engines sounds persist for 6 to 7 seconds. If not, I would replace the batteries with new ones as these engines are more than 10 years old. Especially the first GG-1 if it has the original 5 volt board in it. Shorted batteries I believe can take out the boards I believe and I hope you don't have that problem.

What Joe said, above.

Also nether one will run any faster than bout 10 MPH.

That's a completely different situation. Do you have a DCS speed limit set?
