MTH LED passenger car lighting

Are they selling retrofit kits? DYI is much cheaper and can be done to any passenger car. There are plenty of posts here if you use the search engine.

Yep, gunrunnerjohn's LEDCCLR (pictured) is most definitiely the way to go (other than of course using his entire kit if you prefer not to solder.

BTW, Laidoffsick,curious as to what are all  those holes in the white base of the car are for?

LOS can confirm but that looks to me like an aluminum body shell and car interior base from either a K-Line car or a Lionel car produced from K-Line tooling. I've learned from taking apart some of these recently that the interior bases were standard across a number of different car types and produced pre-drilled for a variety of different seating arrangements to be attached to them. In some cars (coaches for example) the holes are mainly covered by the seating. In others, however, such as observation and parlor cars they are all too visible even with the seating in place.

 

Here's a photo of the interior base from a Lionel 21" Texas Special observation car I am working on, which was produced using K-Line tooling/parts. The white dots are where I filled the visible holes before devising a means to put a floor covering over them. Without it you can clearly see the holes inside the car through the windows. 

 

 

This project has a ways to go before it's done. Watch this space; I have big plans for the bar area!

He is correct, its just the standard floor in that K-Line baggage car. I used the K-Line connectors as well, so the lights can be disconnected when taking the car apart if you want to dim or brighten the LED strip.

I guess the market for LED Lighting Kits will dry up if all the manufacturer's go to LED lighting!

 

Perhaps, but that creates a new market Incandescent Lighting Kits for guys that want the nostalgic look.

When CD's, MP3 players, etc. came out, the market for vinyl record players and the records themselves vanished. Now I see you can again buy vinyl record players at mainstream big-box stores; so you can have scratches, hiss, and all...

You can also get lots of albums now, on special premium vinyl at a premium price to go with your new turntable. I still have an old B&O (not Baltimore & Ohio) turntable, but it made a nasty buzzing sound last time I tried to use it (maybe early '90s?). I don't know if they are even still around or if there is anyone in town to fix it. The dealer retired and closed up shop years ago, that's where I had all my audio equipment serviced. They were the only B&O dealer in town.

 

Back to LED's, if I had any passenger cars (have no passenger cars yet) that needed LED's, I would use GRJ's LED kits available from Henning's Trains. Well thought out design, I don't see how you could go wrong. And we all know the guy that created them.
