So I got a call from Trainworld yesterday regarding my back order for the 2-car add on of the MTH NJ Transit Bombardier Bi-Level cars. Picked them up today.. I back ordered these things almost 5 years ago... I thought they were cancelled. I saw them recently placed in a Catalog, but read somewhere that they were not going to be released.. Oh well...

Since My layout is in Phoenix, and Im here in Brooklyn, A few tracks on a table will have to do for now...

I would not buy the those MTH models because they do not resemble the prototype NEW JERSEY TRANSIT Bi-level cars that were specifically designed for NEW JERSEY TRANSIT which must have adequate clearance to fit through the Hudson River tunnels and have been in service now about nine years. These tunnels under the Hudson River were built over 100 years ago (utilizing 600 volt DC third rail prior to 11,000 volt 25 Hertz AC re-electrification with overhead catenary)

I get really confused with MTH shipping cycle.

The ALP series was back in 2009. They released the ALP-44 which I missed but took them years to release the ALP-46.

Funny, the ALP-44 is really an AEM-7, and I have read somewhere that the station announcements are not accurate.

So, now, I'm wondering what station announcements have been recorded on the ALP-46????

The real "multilevel" cars are only available in HO, from Island Modelworks. Since the prototypes are mostly flat surfaces, I've given some thought to scratchbuilding them, but probably not full scale length. I'd need one of the HO cars as reference though.

 

The ALP46 is still in the catalog, so chances are if I actually pull off thie feat of scratchbuilding, I'll be able to get something to pull them.

I bought two of the MTH, 4621 and 4611 in 2 rail scale wheels at this past York.  I love them, I haven't taken a scale ruler out but visual comparisons to the real thing–I see everyday passing through the Path Station in Harrison–I'd give the MTH model 2 thumbs up.  
 
PCJ if you do decide to scratch build I'd also be interested.  I was looking at a sheet aluminum as a possible starting point but this maybe an undertaking which could easily exceed my available free time.  A water jet cut kit could also be possible.  If the more common bilevel cars don't work out I do see them also doing service on the older generation comet cars.
Thesehaven't been put in service yet but they have been delivered.

What kind of numbers are we talking? We might have fence-sitters who'd jump in if they knew they could collectively put the project over the top. (I'm one of them, btw)

 We only need about 20 - 25 of them to make the model a reality.  To keep production costs down, I would make one model, with interchangeable front ends so that the car could be a cab car or trailer.

    Yes, we are Island Modelworks. The model would be available in kit form, made out of cast resin, like all of our models. They would include a one piece body, with an interchangeable front, to model either a cab car or a trailer, chassis, and trucks. The price would depend on the interest received, if we received pre-orders of 20 or more, the models would sell for about $100.00 each, if we only receive 15 pre-orders, they would sell for $125.00 each, and if we only received 10, the models would sell for $175.00 each.

I saw a pair of those new DP engines at NJT's MMC near Harrison, NJ.  Looks pretty sweet.
