By "snappy solenoid type" do you mean the so-called vibrator-motors that "buzz" at the AC 60 Hz frequency?

I wouldn't call can motors "quiet" as most use economical but noisy plastic gear reduction mechanisms albeit quieter than the vibrator-motors.  If you search youtube videos with the appropriate search terms, you can judge for yourself how quiet they are.  MTH has offered both mechanisms.

I had three MTH operating cars.  The log dump and side coal dump work great slow and quiet, the milk car works great nice and slow quiet. However if the milk crates jam for some reason its a pain to take apart to clear jam.               Thats my experience with them.

Thanks Clem!

I had rather purchase operating accessories with the small can style motors instead of the ones with the solenoids because I don’t like the loud noise that those solenoid types make.  I like the smooth operations and much less noisy features of the can style.  That’s why I was asking if MTH only produces the can style and not the solenoid types.

Hello Blake Morris

I have 3 MTH Railking operating cars and all 3 have motor driven systems with gear boxes and worked well no problems at all.  The 3 cars are 1) Aquarium car, 2) log dump car ,3) coal dump car.  I had the Aquarium car for 9 years (bought it new).  They are much better than the lionel operating cars even the postwar ones. I am planing to get 3 more Railking cars (die-cast search light car, operating hopper and signalman boxcar)
