I am looking for some advice. I purchased a 2nd hand MTH SD70ACE, the NS #1001 proto 3 from someone on the forum.  I have had trouble with it ever since I got it.  I am happy visually with the unit, so I am not that upset.  However, I now have had my local shop involved for about 6 months.  We have put a new proto 3 board in.  Now all of the engine functions work, but the front pilot ditch lights do not.  I am being asked to try and source a new 3V LED ditch light with the pigtail.

I am thinking about giving up on this unit and selling it off.  I still have my proto 2 unit which runs perfectly.  Would you guys sink more time into this thing?

MTH service dept took possession of the PS/3 board and it was sent back here repaired.  All was believed to be fixed until it was re-assembled by my shop guy.  He then found that the ditch lights were not operating, so he traced the problem to a faulty ditch light.  He is telling me it is shorted.  I assume he would have tested the LED bulb separately.  I didn't do any of the troubleshooting myself, so I don't know the specifics.  All I know is it ended up requiring MTH service staff, phone conversations, and service to the chips on the board.  It seems like at some point this engine was overloaded or shorted itself to the point of frying several different components.  The LED seems to be the last of the burned up parts.

It's had two different firmwares on it afaik.  the shop said it had the wrong file and the MTH engineer replaced it with the correct file.  Again, just trusting that these guys know what they are doing.  When the wrong system firmware was in it the engine would run out of control, but it no longer does that.  It now has full speed control on conventional power and on MTH TIU.

If I can find a broken engine with a good pilot I could use the parts, but thus far I have been unable to find an ebay auction for a MTH PS/3 shell with a pilot.

I have no idea on the chain files.  Yes, shop is certified MTH tech.  We were using the MTH Z-4000 transformer in conventional and a standard TIU in digital hooked to test track when he showed me what he was doing to it.  It all kind of boils down to do I trust this thing, not having done anything to it myself.

I think I've made up my mind to just get rid of it as-is.  It's a shame really, but I would rather spend time and $$$ on acquiring a unit with more reliability.

I am confused in your tech just sent the board in for repair???  If MTH service was involved that means your MTH tech did not have a test set to test the board, nor ability to load sound files and chain files?

Here is the problems I have seen with the SD-70 especially the RK versions.  The LED plug into a patch panel near the front of the engine and the wiring is not the long, so when you take shell off you carefully have to unplug those lights.  Some times the pins have cracked solder joints, some times the wire pulls out of the connector or has a broken wire.

So, your tech should test the LED as others have mentioned.  Check the patch panel PCB.  G
