MTH Premier Steam lubrication

Did you ever notice that red & tacky has an odor? When my dad was over running engines without the smoke going he got a little sick. He kept saying he was smelling something. sure enough it was the red & tacky that resulted in his asthma flair up. It was so bad he had to leave the house.

I never used R&T until I decided to replace the grease in that particular engine a few days ago. Later my wife said that she smelled something different in the house for the past few days.

Weird but when you think of it the grease is made for outdoor equipment.

Ok the incident today gave me a scare but it was sudden and at first unexplained. I did some looking and this is what I found on their MSD for Red & Tacky.

I have very bad asthma since 1965 and still do to this day, I used Red & Tacky #2 in my 2 engines and not had any problems with breathing or irritations problems. I guess it depends how much you use the grease or opening the tube and sniffing it would surely cause it. There are some teens that would sniff spray paint as I think that would be worse.  I believe many members who use the R&T in their trains would have better sense not do that and not have any problems.  I believe there is no such a thing as 100% human safe grease.

The MTH instructions will advise you properly about lubrication; what they say is all

you need to know. If you do not have them, I imagine that they are available online

at their website.

I have never seen any reference to removing the boiler on a model steam locomotive for

lubrication, regardless of brand.

Oil the rods and even the valve gear a bit, the axles (trucks included, unless the truck has delrin axle bearings - no need) and grease where it says "grease". That's it.
