Hello all,

Looking to flesh out some info about this engine. I got a message saying,

"Keep in mine that this engine does not have any of the MTH electronic which is where the value is."

I'm hoping to verify if that statement is true or not. What electronics would it have?

So, I got this info from MTH, but that doesn't tell me who made the electronics:

The info you quoted from MTH was not complete.  Here is the full "picture."

"Cab No. 12 Features: Constant Voltage & Directional Lighting, Flywheel Can Motor w/Ball Bearing Drive Train, Fire Box Glow, lighted Cab Interior w/Figure, 3 Rail Models Have Enhanced Proto Sounds-Smoke-Coupler A Premier Model."

Over the years, MTH has produced engines that operate conventionally (by way of a transformer with something to move to change train speed or direction) and that operate with command control (transformer applies set voltage to track and handheld remote allows user to change a lot of engine characteristics).  To my knowledge, MTH no longer makes engines that only run conventionally, but the newer ones are dual option capable.

It appears from your box end that said 2-rail engine is only able to run conventionally.  For some model railroaders, that is a plus, for others, that is a negative.

Good luck with your continuing sales efforts.

What Bob said!  If the buyer wants electronics they can be added.  It's a 2R DC model.  Some folks think it's a plus, others don't.  If they don't want it, then they shoudn't buy it.  If adding electronics scares them, they shouldn't buy it.

Bottom line, the guy wasn't going to buy it anyway.  If ya gotta lose some sleep, please don't let it be from this one.

Although you can easily look up the list price, you won't find what it sold for as easily. Even then, it won't tell what it's worth right now.

Just this week, a NY dealer sold a whole list of 2 rail MTH engines made around the last ten years. They didn't bring in nearly what they were worth. If I had the cash, I would have grabbed them all!

a new one has PS3 electronics featuring onboard DCC, chuffing smoke, sounds, etc. Yours made 17 years earlier then the later example below, does not have that. You can't go by the list price in this particular case. Although some are blasting the person who sent the message, he is telling you info correctly.

Hi Joe,

I didn't notice anyone blasting the potential buyer, but yes this is a vintage 2-rail item. I'm sure it will find its way to the right home, someone out there wants this exact item, seems to work out that way!

Straight 2-rail means, er ... as you turn the knob it goes faster!  OK, the lights, etc come on too.  If it's got MTH PS3 in it the first 5-7 volts will be grabbed by the DCC compatible bits and sound.  If your DC controller is a 12vDC maximum output voltage type, then 12vDC is all you can get and it may not go too fast!

If you're running DC in O scale, I hope you can supply more than 12 volts to the rails.
