Hello All,

I have an MTH Alco S2 diesel switcher (20-2684-1) that I would like to adjust the throttle notching. Is this possible? It seems like it takes a significant increase in speed before the rpm’s increase to the next level. I would like to “tighten” it up a bit. This is a 3v ps2 system.

what are you using for power? what's the track voltage at the rails?

(just wondering if the engine is starved on power at the rails)

What are you using for control? Are you running command?

Using the DCS remote, you can change the engine revs independently from the engine moving. Use the rev up or rev down functions.

It takes some practice but can add fun to the running.

Using DCS, hand held remote, powered with MTH brick.  Ideally, would like it to notch up in 5 mph increments. Right now it’s 7 or 8 mph per notch. I have a smaller layout, so anything freight doesn’t run faster than 20 mph. Otherwise, it looks too fast. At 20 mph, I would like it to sound like it’s working harder. I have been using the “rev up” button, and it sounds nice, but when it comes to a stop, it’s still reved up.

Well, the DCS locomotives are controlled in scale MPH, so if the remote says 5 MPH, the engine should be running 5 scale MPH.  The remote increments/decrements in 1 scale MPH increments, and the engine should follow what it displayed on the remote.

Are you seeing the display on the remote jump many MPH, or is there a disconnect between what the remote is displaying and the engine is doing?

Some soundsets operate differently. It seems like the Alco ones to me anyways, notch differently than say a GE soundset. There's a bigger lag time (in the sounds) in changing speeds.

I believe that's to capture more of how the real engine works. It could be better, but I don't believe there's any adjustment you can do outside of manually notching it up or down as you run.

I think the OP is asking about the automatic change in RPM rev sounds...rather than the manual RevUp and RevDn buttons.

The PS electronics has a fixed table that maps the tach-reported engine speed into a rev notch level.  The user cannot alter this mapping to reduce the size of the zones to, say, 5 sMPH.

What may be confusing is the table has hysteresis so that the sounds do not wobble between two levels if the engine is running right at a transition speed.  In other words if the notch sound goes up at speed X when accelerating, it will go back down when decelerating only when the speed drops a few sMPH below X.

Separately, re the rev sound remaining at the higher notch when coming to a stop, if I understand what you're describing I think you just need to press the RevDn button before you slow down the engine.  This will kick the sounds out of manual mode and back to automatic mode where the notch sounds follows the actual tach-reported speed.

Agreed this is "extra" button pressing, but it seems complementary to what you do on the up side when manually pressing RevUp to increase the notch sound above what the automatic table maps for 20 sMPH.
