MTH Quilling Whistle Questions

Yes this can be done. I have changed out a quilling whistle on a PS3 Railking engine. Mark DiVecchio has detailed a lot of information about the MTH sounds files on his website and does include instructions to do so. His website is located here.

Keep in mind that his instruction need to be followed to the letter and this will require some computer expertise as well as knowledge of how to upload and download MTH sound files. While not easy, it can be done, and the end result is worth while.

Also, I'm not sure if all PS3 Railking engines can have a quilling whistle added, @SanDiegoMark touches on that on his site.

Lastly, he does have videos that show the end results of his labor.

Don't sweat it.  The MTH "quillable" whistles don't sound so great either anyhow, or more accurately, you can't really control them well, at least no where near what you can do with the Lionel Legacy whistles.

Using the remote is tough and takes A LOT OF PRACTICE but when I use my WIU, the feature is perfect IMO and sounds fine compared to Lionel's version. They both have PROS/CONS but they both sound great to me.

As per the original question, you have two options, load a different sound file that does have Quill (Look for the same engine but in the Premier offering) or do as H1000 said, if the first option is not available you will have to make the file yourself. I have used the software and it takes a few attempts to get it to work but it does work. Read the instructions/watch the videos thoroughly and you should be good to go.

Mike, I thought the same as Jeff, the quillable whistle didn't sound so hot, in fact I didn't really thing it was really possible.  That is from the remote.  Then I quite by accident stumbled on it with the WiFi and was very pleased, as Daniel pointed out.  That was with an engine I was preparing to sell, so I can't say anything about the sound file.  I have not tried it on another engine, because I have been switching my trains to a different room.  Now, I am not comparing it in any way to a Lionel Legacy locomotive.  Legacy may still be better, but at least we know it is possible with MTH.

Using the remote, the MTH whistle is a royal PITA.  I only have one locomotive that has the feature, and I haven't tried the WiFi on it, that has to wait until my layout is running again.

It was posted here, that you can toggle between the smoking whistle and speed control by pressing down the thumbwheel. It makes using the remote much better. 

Better, not nearly as seamless as with Legacy.

So was the engine you stumbled on it with a PS3?  If so, is that something the PS3 (or maybe PS2) engines come installed with, or was that engine "upgraded"?

It sure seems like it would be!

My reasoning for even asking about this is because in the future, I'd like to buy another steamer and thought it'd be cool to have one with the quilling whistle.  I understand the Premier steamers have them, but due to their prices, I'll most likely be sticking to Railking.  Just thought it'd be neat to have that feature.

MUUCCCHHHH BETTER!! I think that definitely helps but the thumb wheel is the real issue.

Mike, I think it was the PS3 premiere H10.  I do not think it was any PS2 engine, and I haven’t had any that were upgraded

That is my opinion too, Daniel 

I have a 2-8-0 H3 in C&O livery w/ proto 3, it's the only engine I have with the MTH Quillable Whistle and I try my best with the remote but I don't think anyone can become proficient enough at turning the thumb wheel at just the right speed as to make it sound prototypical.

Now, when I fire up my WIU, it sounds simply beautiful. 

This is, by far, my favorite steamer I own, its funny, I LOVE huge Diesels, but it's these little steamers that take my heart. The detail in this model is second to none, but that's nor here, nor there lol.

Yes, the Western Maryland H9 PS3 had to be the one I found had the quillable whistle.
