Hi Folks,

I'm 3 hours away from any repair/service so if you have any ideas on how I can problem solve this further or what to check, I'd be very grateful!

I just bought this locomotive used.  The owner said it ran.  It does, but only in forwards and not how an MTH locomotive typically operates.  Based on what I can find online it is supposed to have PS 2.0.   Here is a summary of how it is behaving:

  1. Every time I powered track, it would go forwards (no neutral or backwards conventional operation)
  2. Not discoverable with DCS remote
  3.  Light doesn't work ( I changed bulbs and that's not issue)
  4. Sound doesn't work

I took off the shell and discovered this strange wire (see photos for "speaker" wire) which appears to have been soldered on perhaps as a bypass. I removed that wire and now engine doesn't respond at all.

Thanks,

Gerhardt

Hi GERHARDT,

Im not sure about that wire, but i do know you'll be way better off  throwing out that white battery and getting a new one (or at least a rechargeable 9 volt of the 8.4 variety). Those old MTH white batteries are way to old to hold a sufficient charge. The newer ones are green and much better

I'm sure somebody will chime in whose a little more knowledgeable about that wiring issue

He wired the 5V directly to the motor bypassing the Motor driver fets.  I imagine the board is powering up and making 5V from the regulator, but does not work.  It is dead, and he lied to you and jury rigged it to run in one direction on 5VDC.  G

Hi GGG,

Thanks for responding. So what would be my next step in fixing this? Thanks
