I picked up a MTH RK PS-2 PRR S-2 at York last Oct for a great price ($160.00).  Worked great first time I put it on the rails, running with DCS.  I heard BCRs were a good idea for PS 2 engines (all my other MTH engines are PS3) so I put one in.  Worked great at first, but shortly after the headlight stopped working.  Then the smoke unit stopped working (its obvious the fan is running, but the heating elements are not heating the wick), then the back-up light stopped working.  Sounds and all other engine operation still work great.  Seems too coincidental that all three of these features failed randomly at nearly the same time.  The only change I made to the engine was the BCR.  Is the BCR the culprit?  Is it possible (and worth the time/effort) to upgrade this engine to PS3 to restore the light and smoke features?

Like many I was saddened to hear of MTH closing, then elated to hear DCS will continue to be supported.  The later motivated me to see if I could get this loco running with all features functional!  Thanks for any help.

Your engine from this post

Did you get it to work after that until now?

Looks like it has a PS2 3 volt board in it.

It might need a tech to look over it to see what failed. Did you try to reset it?

Maybe something simple that's wrong inside like a poor ground or something. Tethers sometimes fail and need re-soldering or changing. A tech could at least test the board to see what works.

The BCR only provides power during power interruptions. Symptoms  would be like stalling on switches. It can be tested by killing the power and see if it plays shutdown sequence.

Thanks for the responses.  Actually, there is more information than I included in my previous post in that the smoke unit also failed.  I can tell by the slight whine that the fan spins when the smoke feature is set to on, but the resistors are obviously not heating the wick.  It seems curious to me that both these features failed (headlight and smoke unit) in a relatively short time span, but not at the same time.  Also, neither failed immediately after I installed the BCR.  I did checked the connections to the headlight and had no luck.  After a feature reset, the back-up light does work however.   I also tested the BCR by disconnecting the track power and the shutdown sequence commenced as expected.

While it is possible I have bad connections to both the headlight and the smoke unit resistors, that scenario seems too coincidental to me.  Could there be something wrong with the board?  Or something else altogether?  Just wondering if those with more experience with PS 2 engines than me had any more insight given the extra information.  Thanks.
