I adquiere this set from Mr. Muffin. I order it Friday night and get it next Wednesday free shipping, couldn't believe. When I tried to log in the engine in my system it read ENGINE ERROR I email Mr Muffin costumer service about 9:00 pm and they reply me with what to tray and offer me the alternative to send the engine back for a replacement if I could not fix it, I did what he suggested, reset the engine from the Z-400 transformer. Here how to do it, tap whistle-horn once, tap bell bottom 5 times, engine is reset, place the engine back to track log it in and there is this beauty running.Once again thank you Mr. Muffin, I am still wondering how you have customer tech support at midnight lol, thanks

Cool. The MTH rocket set is one of the nicer products they make. I think it is a bargain.
My friend has the one that they had the Southern Passenger car but he used stainless steel K-Line Santa Fe Hoppers instead of PFE and the Pipe flat
My friend has the one that they had the Southern Passenger car ...
FYI for folks who have one of the newer sets w/o the passenger car included... MTH offered that as a separate-sale item this time around.
I agree with Lee. It's a unique offering, and the great price is a real bonus.
David
I believe we still have these on our web site.

I agree, Forrest. I ended up buying two sets. One I run with the covers off - just so interesting to see the various parts of the rocket inside. The other I run with the covers on, but empty (how can you tell?). I have assembled the various parts of the rocket and have it on display complete. BIG rocket. Very cool!
This thread inspired me to make a special display shelf for the rocket itself. As I said I had the rocket sections from one of my sets out of the cars and assembled, but I had the rocket standing in an out of the way corner. There really wasn't a great place to show it off. Most of the display areas in my train-room are made to show off long, low things, not tall, narrow things. So . . . took all of ten minutes to make and mount.

Did MTH ever produce a special leading buffer car that has the outline of the rocket booster covers on it? Something like what's in the image below...

In the 2010 V1 catalog which lists the set that was lead by the AC4400, MTH suggests the Missouri Pacific - 50’ High Cube Box Car Set 20-90528 as buffer cars.
-WestinghouseEMDdemoguy - sets are available without an engine! See page 126 MTH 2014 v1 catalog.
We can pull the engine out of a set and just sell you the cars. Call us tomorrow. 317.569.1999.
thanks.

Lol. No Mayhem here. Mrs Muffin is in town.
Very nice purchase. Steve is good people to work with.
I just bought the NS set from Charlie Nassau Hobby Center. With the May Mayhem sale it was a really good deal. I've wanted the set ever since Lee posted his thread a few months ago.
Larry
To be honest I couldn't resisted after Lee posted his thread, I think he kick up the sales, I am very happy with this set and happiest after found out that its really goes well in spite of its width 3 1/4" through my layout. Now I can wait for the Lionel Legacy MOW crane I ordered last year and now reschedule for Dec.2015.

Thanks Larry, we still have NS and UP both left in stock!
For a dog...your layout has to be the best in the land!!!! In fact you nay be the only dog model railroader I have ever known!!!!!
Congrats on the layout!!!
Cute puppy, but your avatar is supposed to be a picture of you. Not fussing, but don't want to see your picture deleted and have you wonder "what happened?".
So the dog was taking credit for what the baby did!!!!!!
Bad dog.....bad dog......
Now it's a great layout built by a baby......congrats again!

The MTH product locator is showing one available under "find it locally"!

thanks.
Would you do this with other MTH sets, especially if they were "pre-ordered"? I've often found a set I want but would prefer a different engine.
We have one NS set left. Thanks!
Charlie I can't seem to find it on your site
We have one NS set left. Thanks!
I must have order the last up....

Sure - we have done this for several of you guys on the Forum....
As soon as Charlie sells out, give us a try.... we have two UP sets and one NS set left.... MTH sold out today - guess where their last set went?......
Hay guys
Sure would like a hint on the locations, like a number of something to search for???
I'm familiar with both of your webs and can't find these???
Just saying. And I tried this mourning as well and gave up.
Larry
On both mr muffins and Charlie site, you need to look up the Mth model number on their site, then search Mr muffins and Charlie's using that part number. That's the only thing that works for sure. I do like Charlie close out listing
Thanks for the Info Jim.

I have the 2010 NASA version of this set and I want to know how you separated the rocket parts from the cars. Maybe I'm missing something but the rocket parts seem to be glued to the cars.
Up's sold out today's. I think we have one NS left
"I have the 2010 NASA version of this set and I want to know how you separated the rocket parts from the cars. Maybe I'm missing something but the rocket parts seem to be glued to the cars."
IIRC, the segments are held in place by small screws through the bottom of the car.
Sorry.
20-20392-1 is UP and 20-20393-1 is NS. You can also do a search for "rocket" and they should pop up.
Thanks.

Thanks for great free shipping. Ordered Tuesday, got it today!!
The NS is gone; but two UPs remain.... always free shipping at $300 and up...
Thanks
Well, we are down to one UP set, and MTH is sold out. Thanks Lee, for this review. This has really been fun.
Steve......
We have a couple of these sets in stock.
Thanks

Dash-8 Diesel Solid Rocket Motor Transport Boxed Set w/Proto-Sound 3.0 - Union Pacific

Dash-8 Diesel Solid Rocket Motor Transport Boxed Set w/Proto-Sound 3.0 - Union Pacific Features U.P. Dash-8 locomotive, five 47’ TTX Heavy Duty Flat Cars with a removable covered load, each containing a section of the rocket. The covered loads are hinged at the top and lift off the car to reveal the rocket section. All five sections can be assembled to form a complete rocket. Product Number: 20-20392-1 M.S.R.P. $ 749.95 Bookmark and Share First appeared in: 2014 Volume 1 If you have ever wondered how NASA moves those solid rockets around prior to launch, then this all-new Solid Rocket Transport train should give you the answer. Due to the rocket motors large size, moving it completely assembled from its Utah manufacturing site to Cape Canaveral, Florida is impractical. Consequently, the rocket section is loaded atop a heavy-duty flat car and transported by rail in a unit train to the launch area where it is then assembled. The route traveled takes the train southeast via the Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, CSX and Florida East Coast routes. Each rocket section is covered with a removable large steel cover for both protection and secrecy as to the car's load. Often each car in the unit train is separated by "buffer" car that can absorb any impact caused by a derailment or other mishap. The buffer cars can take the form of additional flat cars with covers or a boxcar. The Premier Line six-car Solid Rocket Transport train includes five 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Cars with covers and a powerful Dash-8 diesel. The cover houses different sections of the rocket, each of which can be removed from the car and assembled into a free-standing rocket. When assembled, the rocket measures 30 ¾" in height or nearly 123 scale feet! A sixth car in the form of a streamlined passenger coach serves as the Transport train's crew car. 5-Car Solid Rocket Motor Transport Set - Union Pacific
ZOOM | ||||||||||||
5-Car Solid Rocket Motor Transport Set - Union Pacific It seems appropriate that the Space Age and the Railroad Age connect at Promontory, Utah, where the Golden Spike was driven in 1869 to complete the first transcontinental railroad. For over three decades, the solid rocket motors that have boosted the Space Shuttle and other American endeavors into outer space have been built at the ATK plant in Promontory and shipped by rail to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at Cape Canaveral. The Shuttle booster sections, which traveled the route from 1981–2010, were each 12’ wide and weighed 150 tons, half again the capacity of a typical freight car. Thus the dedicated trains assigned to this route consist of 4-truck heavy-duty flat cars with large steel covers for both protection and secrecy; each fully loaded car weighs over 250 tons. Often bringing up the rear is a retired Southern passenger car housing ATK and NASA engineers, keeping watch on what is essentially a load of 4–5 million pounds of explosives. On their way from the Southwest to the Southeast, the rocket trains travel over Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, CSX and Florida East Coast rails before finishing their trip behind NASA’s own SW1500 switchers (which have also been offered as M.T.H. models). After being fished out of the Atlantic Ocean, the spent boosters travel the same route back to ATK for refueling. Our Premier six-car Solid Rocket Transport train includes five authentic 47’ TTX heavy-duty flat cars with removable covers that reveal a five-piece rocket model. When assembled, the rocket measures 30 3/4” in height or nearly 123 scale feet! The Southern personnel car is also available as an add-on item. Features Set Includes (5) 47' TTX Heavy Duty Flat Cars with Removable Covers & Rocket Sections Flat Car Features Metal Wheels and Axles Sprung Die-Cast 4-Wheel Trucks Operating Die-Cast Metal Couplers Authentic Paint Scheme Fast-Angle Wheel Sets Needle-Point Axles Separate Metal Handrails Decorative Brake Wheels Intricately Detailed Durable ABS Bodies Removable Cover Removable Rocket Section 1:48 Scale Dimensions

Track diameter?
No issues with mine running on 072 curves. Certainly don't think they are to light with the diecast trucks and loads. I would guess the derailing has to do with your track.
Bill T
I've had no problems with mine, but I have run them through nothing tighter than O-60 curves. I've never checked what they are rated for.
I just checked the track and a screw head was up a little bit, It didn't effect the other cars but the rocket transports do ride lower. So we are good to go!!
