That looks awesome, Mario!  I love the Susquehanna paint scheme/color combo.  What couplers did you install?  I’m assuming they are Kadees, but are they the regular-length box or the short box?

I use Protocraft on the front of my lead units; they just look great. I’ll have to use a new one on the front of this unit so I can attach a ring to the cut lever, like on the Atlas GP35.

The rear of my units get a Kadee 740, without the trip pin. This one happens to be a 743 (short shank) as that’s what I had on hand already painted.

thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Mario.  The Protocraft coupler does look great!  The Kadee 743’s come with a plastic gearbox, correct?  What about Protocraft...are their gearboxes plastic or metal...or do they offer both?  I always use metal Kadee boxes on my 3RS freight cars...and also on the couple of diesels that I’ve 3-rail scaled so far.  Just curious what you do—metal or plastic—and if it really matters?

Anytime, Joe!

I actually use a Kadee box for the Protocraft.

There have been many 2 rail MTH offerings that were cancelled from lack of orders (I've been told). I've ordered a few and got most of those. I don't believe MTH makes any extra 2 rail versions any more.  So if you want it, you have to order it. That makes waiting until you see any mistakes, out of the question. Most of my power pool, was from the days when they did make extras or I got them second hand.

I didn’t realize the 2R locomotives are pretty much BTO. Glad I got one!

Well...after seeing this thread posted by Mario--and the one originally posted by Forum-sponsor JR Junction--I couldn't fight off the temptation any longer and ordered this same NYS&W GP40 yesterday...my first-ever 2-rail locomotive purchase.  I couldn't resist the combination of the Susquehanna's paint scheme, fixed pilots and full-length handrails...LOL!

And I hear what you're saying Mario as I'm pretty sure I got the last 2-rail one JR Junction had in stock...so I'm glad I decided to do it yesterday.  It shipped out today and the tracking info says I may receive it tomorrow.  Really looking forward to it.  I even ordered Protocraft couplers yesterday, so I guess I'm inching my way closer and closer to the "dark side".

That's great to hear!  It is great looking!  And being the actual loco based here in Utica, it's special to me.  That's why I bought one, and its my only "modern" locomotive I have, and one of the few that'n not NYC. (A NYC Atlas GP35 & an MTH GP40 being the most modern on my roster).

I was talking with Phil at @JR Junction Train & Hobby and he mentioned that all I needed was a matching CSX GP40 to make up this summer's power that runs up and down the valley.  BTW, Phil is our local CNY NRHS Club President and super hero!

Thanks to YouTube channel Railroading Rambler for this screen shot.

Thanks!

My first-ever 2-rail locomotive purchase arrived last week from forum-sponsor JR Junction.  Over the Memorial Day weekend I had a chance to unbox it, install a Kadee coupler on the rear, test it out (on 3-rail MTH RealTrax--that's all I had available) and shoot a few quick pictures with my iPhone.  It ran and sounded great!  I really liked Mario's idea of installing a Protocraft coupler on the front end, so I placed an order which is due to arrive this week.

I'll take some better photos after installing the Protocraft coupler and doing a bit of touch-up and detail painting.  I also have to fashion a handle for one of the cab doors as it was missing and nowhere to be found in the box.  No big deal.  While I'm at it, I might remove the "tab" on each end of the frame that's supposed to represent the prototype's drop-steps and replace with more realistic ones from Atlas.
