Hi. I just acquired my first MTH locomotive (C&O 4-8-4 Greenbrier with PS2 upgrade) and am ready to get an MTH DCS system. Not wanting to go wi-fi now, so please don’t suggest that. What I want to know: 1. Should I only get a TIU with USB? 2. What is the latest operating system (looking at a TIU  with 6.1)? 3. Will I be able to run PS3 engines with that particular TIU?

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s my understanding that the latest/ newest MTH TIU is for use with the MTH WiFi system and does NOT support the use of an MTH handheld remote.

Correct. The new TIU/WIU combo, 50-1039,  does not work with the remote.  It doesn't have a receiver board to communicate with the remote.  It's for the App only.  It will be available next year.

To add to all this for clarity:

The reason you want the TIU with the built in USB, is that is a version "L".

That unit has the best signal output. Any older TIU can be updated to DCS 6.1. So that alone doesn't mean it's a version "L".

The (older) product number 50-1003 that was used for years, doesn't determine what version you'll get.

Okay. So I’m also looking at a 50-1001 set (TIU and remote). Thought that was an early version w/o USB. Here’s a photo of the bottom of the TIU. Thought I’d seen Rev L in gold on another TIU. Does this look like a legit Rev L?

I’m still confused. Seller says no USB but has RevL on bottom of TIU.

The port for the USB cable port is unmarked between the Proto-Dispatch and AIU Input ports. I'm not sure what the plug is called that goes in here, but the other end of the cable is a USB.

It's a USB, just not the rectangular one lots of people think about that matches the port prevalent on most computers/laptops.

See the nifty Wikipedia table with details here.  The MTH TIU has USB type B connector, I'm pretty sure.  Its entry is listed under "Standard B" in the Table rows, under the columns from "1996" through "USB 2.0 Revised".  Some printers (and I'm sure other peripherals) also have/had this I believe.
