MTH v Atlas / Williams / Lionel

This subject has been covered many times before on this and other fora; just look around.  However, your "important note" makes an answer simple.  Lionel and Atlas (non-conventional) both use a version of Lionel's Legacy/TMCC control system.  They can only be run through DCS in conventional mode (which you don't want).  Williams engines, out of the box, only run conventional.  Thus, by your "notes" criteria, you will only be buying MTH with DCS.

It is possible to run TMCC with DCS if you use the Lionel command base along with The DCS system.

Seems to me that you answered your own question, keep buying MTH locomotives with PS/2 or PS/3.  You're not interested in conventional or any other command system, so you just neatly boxed out all other possibilities.

Here is an off the wall question, can a Williams engines be upgraded with PS2 or PS3 if they have can motors?

DCS can operate virtually any 3-Rail modern engine. However, there are caveats.

It will operate PS2 and PS3 engines in DCS Mode.

It will operate TMCC and Legacy engines in TMCC Mode withe addition of any Lionel command base and an MTH cable. Otherwise, it will operate them in conventional mode.

It will operate all other engines in conventional mode.

Just about any engine with a flywheel and can motors can be upgraded to PS3. This includes Williams engines.

I've converted Lionel, Williams, K-Line, and 3rd Rail to TMCC and PS/2.  Only some of the really old Williams with no flywheels and certain starter sets with no flywheels are excluded from a possible conversion.
