I just received an older MTH F3 set. ABA - 20-2218-1 PRR. Circa 2000.

They appear to be in excellent condition - but I have no knowledge of their runtime/history. But I've read enough threads about batteries and resets that I figured I'd ask if there was an accepted routine when firing up these older engines? I'm thinking more about electrical safegaurds.

I believe these are Proto 1 engines - but pre DCS. I guess they are considered conventional?

The only modern transformer I have is a CW-80 - is that suitable for running/testing these?

Thanks for any direction here!

Your CW80 will not be able to run your F3's if both A's are powered. The early ones did have 4 motors.  If you're looking for a decent inexpensive power supply, consider an MTH Z-1000.

If those are Proto 1, definitely consider replacing the battery with a BCR.  Whatever you do, do not put in a regular 9-volt battery.  There is a charging circuit in there and regular batteries do not handle it well.

Thank you Fred - that's exactly the kind info I'm looking for.

I just looked at the label - and you are correct - 4 motors!

Cool - I did not realize both A units were powered.

If you got the manual with the set, it does list what transformers were compatible at the time it was manufactured.  Unfortunately the CW80 is not due to its output wave form.   The MTH Z1000 is a good choice and not that expensive.  If you do not replace the battery with a BCR, use a new rechargeable battery and charge it first before attempting to run the engine.

They look to be in excellent condition.  Make sure you lube (grease & oil) before running.   They pull like a mule.  You can easily handle 40-60 freight cars (depending on your curves) without any problem.  Inspect the traction tires.  If cracked and/or dried out replace.

There are tons of proto-1 engines still running after almost 30 yrs service.

ENJOY.
