Nope, you can configure them to run in either direction in an MU (lashup) configuration.

If you are using the lash up feature direction does not matter.

As best I  can tell the new APP only allows for a front center and rear So using the latest APP I can only run 3 together. I posted the question before actually trying this so as not to damage anything. ..

I tried running all as a start/run (GP's) all but one is faster than the others so that won't work

I did try running 2 trainmasters as a lash up under the App but one was pulling and the other pushing. Both are physically headed the same direction.

Is this in Barry's book? Usually I try everything that comes to mind before looking in the book.

You can run as many centers as you want, Your faster locomotive would have to be a lot faster to hurt anything. When building your lash-up it will ask which direction each locomotive is facing. I would just build your five units and see what happens. You will tell right away if that fast locomotive is causing harm.

seriously fast. I put them about 2 feet apart and the fast one  caught up to all the others in a few minutes. It,s a mix of 3 rail king and 2 premier if that means anything. 1 PS2 and 4 PS3.

Got you on as many centers as I want.

Absolutely - in both books.

Usually I try everything that comes to mind before looking in the book.

That would be doing things backwards!

Jon Z of Lionel once told me to have the fastest engine first with the slowest the last engine.  I have followed that with my MTH MU's as well.  I have had only one issue that occurred with a V1000 and Alco S2 with the V1000 more than 1 smph faster and that messed up the Alco (in repair shop twice before I sold the V1000 and gave it up.)
