I posted to two Threads on this site. that being "What trains did you run today" and What did you do on your layout today".  Because of that I get a message to my Inbox every time some one posts to these threads.  Is there any way to eliminate on a Thread basis these emails?  This may have been already suggested or there may be a switch somewhere I have not found to eliminate these emails.  If so I am sorry for the duplicate suggestion.

Jim, if you want to stop receiving emails for only those threads, go to the thread and click the little bell icon at the top of the page.  If it’s red, you’re following that thread.  Click on it and it will change to blue.  Now you’re no longer following it.  However, if you respond to that thread again, you will again be following it.

Hi Rich,

I went to the area you suggested and I had been there numerous times.  And I did not see anything that would help to eliminate notification for the specified threads.  But hopefully you can see that I have a checkmark in a line that would appear to eliminate ALL notifications not just for the threads I would like to stop getting notifications for.  I don't see by unchecking this box gets me to where I want to go.

Melgar,

Performing your suggestion takes me to Rich's suggested area and you can review my response to him.

Mike H.,

I went to the threads and looked for a "RED" Bell.  Both threads had "BLUE" Bells.  So I am wondering what am I doing incorrectly that I am getting Notifications on these threads and Yet the Bell is "BLUE"?

I am still confused!

Maybe it's just me but, by checking that box I believe that's why you are receiving all those eMails.

I don't see by unchecking this box gets me to where I want to go.

Again, just my opinion with limited knowledge, I believe if you "un-check" that box, you will solve you problem.

Are you perhaps following some of the people in the thread?  That will also generate emails.  Look in your profile near the bottom, any people being followed will be under this blue banner.

The way I thought it worked (and it has worked this way for me) is if you are following someone and they start a new topic you will get an email that the person you are following started a new topic and the contents of that first post but you are not automatically following that particular thread.

Absolutely nothing has changed in the way email notifications are sent from this forum. And they are sent the same way to EVERYONE.

It works however you want it to work. And you have full control over this.

  • If you have the first box checked, whenever you start a new post, you will automatically be following that thread and get emails about it.
  • If you have the SECOND box checked, whenever you post a REPLY in a thread - ANY thread - you will automatically be following that thread and get emails about it.

There are a lot of choices in the notifications area that allow you to customize your email alert settings. If you are not getting the results you want, it is because you don't have your notifications set up properly.

It really is as simple as that.

What I'd like to see is a feature where notifications get rolled up by a certain time period, say, an hour or day, or some other user selectable value.

You already have that feature available. You can setup up Instant Notifications, a Daily Digest or a Weekly Digest. You can even set the notifications by individual forum, if you wish.

It is all there in your notification settings.  You just have to look for them.

@Rich Melvin, Right.  I'm not sure why I'm in your crosshairs here.  That's what I meant to say.  The OP was indicating the exact opposite.  He's saying that he's not following the thread and yet he is receiving emails.  But whatever.  I'm not following this thread!

You're not in my crosshairs, Mike. I misunderstood what you posted. I deleted that part of my post so as not to confuse people any more than they already are.

I am sorry that I apparently am asking how or even if it is possible for something that is confusing. Referring back to my original post here. There are two threads that I posted to and they are apparently very, very active threads. I want to stop getting emails from just these threads unless I would happen to post to either again. Maybe some definition is in order. I am currently writing a POST to this THREAD and this THREAD is contained in the SECTION labeled something like "Tech Support for OGR Forum". The two threads I do not want to get notices for are "What Trains Did You Run Today" and "What Did You Do On Your Layout Today". Both of these threads are in the "Three Rail Traditional Toy Trains" Section. I only want to eliminate notification regarding activity in these two threads and not to any other threads I may post to in "Three Rail Tradional Toy Train" Section or any other thread in any Section I may post to.

Rich M. gave a great explanation in his original response on how to arrive at an area (assuming I followed his instructions correctly) where he thought would get me what I wanted.  All I saw (reference my screenshot) was a line with a check box and it appeared to be an "All or Nothing" decision not based on individual thread(s). If I landed in the wrong area, please tell me I screwed up or tell me how to get to an area where I can tell by settings the thread(s) I would like to shut down email notifications for.

Jim, if you are getting notifications on those two threads, it means you are following those threads. Go to the top of the thread where the title appears. Check the little bell that shows there. If it looks like this: it indicates you are following the thread.

Click the bell and it will change to look like this: which indicates you are not following the thread.

If this still doesn't correct the problem, then you may be following one or more of the posters in the thread. You can check that by going to the thread and mousing over a poster's name. You will then see something like this:

See that little bell next to your name? It works the same as the thread-follow bells. If it is blue, you are not following that specific member. If it is orange (red?) you ARE following that member, and you will get an alert every time that person posts something.

I can almost guarantee that you are following SOMEBODY in those threads.

Good Morning Rich M and Mike H,

I want to apologize first to Mike H.  I thought I followed your instructions to a "T".  And apparently I did not as this morning after Reviewing Rich's post, I thought yes I will play the game thinking I had already been down that road and would get to say "I Told You So".  However this morning when I did go to the two specified threads, Low and Behold the bells were in fact Red.  I clicked on each one and found the "Bells" had returned to "Blue".  So, Rich accept my apologies for doubting you when I read your post this morning.  But, I hope some good came from this as I see this thread garnered over 500 views so someone was interested in the topic.

So, All is "Good in Who-ville" again today.  Oh My.  After reading the News this morning I will need to get another "Happy Dance" saying.  Oh well as I have learned over my many years, "Change is Inevitable.".

Thank-you to all that posted here to help me return my inbox to normalcy.
