Yes, seven series are the newer ones with the hidden springs.

I think the 745 are standard length centered couplers. I prefer to use them when I can. They make shorter ones 743 too that work better on the MTH diesels that don't have the space.

I still prefer to cut the backs off of the 745's boxes when they'll fit.

It's a shame that the pilot detailing is not more exact. SOme guys complain about the handrails. I would focus on the pilots. Having them look like one piece, with those metal boxes (MU?) below the ditch lights and anticlimber on GEs, would be fantastic. I'm not sure what they are, I just don't see them correctly modeled. (where's Santiago when I need him?  The plows could be better fit with the hose cutouts as well.

There was a time right before they went out of business that the prices were really low. Some engines were 199! Lately, those same engines are being fought over with bids in the 5 and 6 hundreds and more! ???

I never got an E8 from them. I wanted them and said I would wait for one in 1/32 scale. That never came. When the price dropped, I should have grabbed a couple of them in 1/29.

There are three ways to go.

  1. Kadee 743 short box/short shank metal coupler/plastic box. I believe the 800 series version is the 806 but the 743 is a much better looking coupler
  2. Kadee 745 standard plastic box/medium metal shank. You'll need to file about 1/8" off the back of the box to clear the hi-rail mounting boss on the truck.
  3. Kadee 740/805 standard metal box/medium shank. Same work as the 745.

I've used the standard boxes shaved down and the short box/short shank Kadees. Both will work fine on the minimum radius of the locomotive. Experience with them has shown that the locomotives will negotiate well-laid 36" radius track but despise kinks and uneven track if you have the 3rd rail pickup rollers in place.

I'm gathering the 800 series are the economy plastic knuckle type.I will probably use the 700 series and mod the box as you suggest.I don't want to machine the truck if possible as metal filings hard to contain.
