The great Natty Boh Reefer post, authored by Paul Strickland, fueled by hundreds. It's hard to believe it was 8 years ago.

Going thru photos today, I came across this photo from the "Baltimore" Pick up of the great Natty Boh reefer project that member Paul Strickland put together. Wonder if anyone else has any photos from that day?

Trying to name everyone, but I can't.

Paul Strickland, myself, Trainpop, Steve Tapper, Wild Mary, Chris, Baltimore Train Works, but I'm lost after that...

Ah yes... I remember that great thread so well.  Atlas-O "Reefer Madness" was alive and well back in the day, and special runs were hit, hot, hot.  That thread was definitely one of the great ones.  Unfortunately, it fell victim to a forum clean-up script that ran amuk -- deleting threads that had the word "sold" in them ANYWHERE rather than just in the topic.

Side note:  Had we known that  would have happened, there's one or two other threads still around here that I would have added the word "sold" to, so they could have met a similar demise.    Like the "What have you done on your layout today" thread.  Really... that is what this entire forum is about.  So why should there be a 300+ page thread about it?    Who's ever gonna read that thread from page 1?  It would take forever -- even for speed readers.

The Natty Boh reefer thread, however, documented one of Atlas-O's most notable special-run reefers from start to finish.  Sad that the forum software and database back-ups couldn't bring it back.

Great pictures, thank you for posting them.

If I had known then, what I know now I would have bought a dozen. As it was, I originally bought one car. Paid stupid money to get the second. FWIW, these cars are on my "never-sell" list. They are always run at the front of the Train of Sin beer train.

Don't you know you're not allowed to drive a Vette in the rain!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a for-sale listing here on the forum quite awhile ago... perhaps a year or two ago.  The seller buried this very reefer in a list of MANY other cars, and I seem to recall he priced it at $65 or $75 (brand new).    Needless to say, it didn't last too long at that price.  But it was just funny to see it listed like that in such a nonchalant way.  Just proves you can never dismiss a for-sale listing too quickly!

There's one for sale of eBay right now if anyone is looking. Better want it real bad, it's expensive!!!!

At $350 asking-price, no thank you.

Ah... it really is GREAT to be cured of "reefer madness".    Somebody else can part with that kind of money and have buyer's remorse before the car even ships.

I much prefer the style of the seller I mentioned earlier in this thread... just bury the car in a listing with lots of other items... price it reasonably... and whoever sees it first wins.

We DID bring it back...sort of.

After many hours of digital forensic work, I was able to "reconstruct" the thread in PDF format for Paul. It wasn't possible to recreate it here in thread format, however.

I don't think Paul will ever forgive me for this mistake.

I forgave you Rich a long time ago, as a Christian I had to, have to admit I didn't want to lol, but none of us are perfect, have made lots of mistakes myself and will make some more before I die.  And yes I am alive and well after a couple of years of health troubles, divorce and relocation, the mythical Peach Hollow is now in Sumerduck, VA, as the song goes "out past where the asphalt ends".  I have emerged, stronger in faith, healthy, and getting ready to build a new layout. Y'all enjoy York next week, see y'all at breakfast Thursday. Prayers for safe travels for everyone going.

My reefer was also on my 'never-sell' list as well, but trying to raise some money for family members in Puerto Rico, I sold it a couple of days ago.

In excellent condition, but a bit dusty from being on display, I sold it for $185.

The interesting point is that I had six folks contact me within about a 24-36 hour period wanting to buy it.  Thus, there is still a lot of interest in this reefer, and given it's history and relative rarity, I can understand why.

Not raining on the parade, but I never understood the Natty craze. Is it rarer than this one?

Nope.

Is is better looking than this one (speaking of white reefers)?

Not to me.

I always figured it must be a Northeastern thing for people living in that area, with a heavy dose of the beany baby /PlayStation-type gotta-have-it-'cause-everyone-else-wants-one syndrome.

both of the Gluek reefers were available at Greenberg show for 85.00 each  I sold all 4 of my Natty Bohs for over $400 each

Proves my point.

Personally, I'd buy the blue Gluek for $85 in a heartbeat. As far as the $400 each Natty Bohs, that's a good example of the "a fool and his money are soon parted" thing. It's silly. Just MHO, of course. Those are the kinds of people who paid $500 for a "rare" beany baby not so many years ago.

The character logo is iconic. I had no clue about the beer as Natty Boh, and the famous thread is before my time, Ive only noticed the long lasting ripples it made. But I know the branding logo and at least get part of it's attraction now that Ive seen it. I'd bet the big money paid is mostly local or by the more serious beer car collectors.

..excuse me, more serious collectors with deep pockets

"a fool and his money are soon parted" thing.

This is probably the rudest phrase to grace a forum.

Personally, I would never tell another person on a forum what to buy or how much to pay for something.

There are many items that I would not buy, that I know bring joy to others.  To imply that others are stupid for spending their hard earned money on whatever they wish is ill-mannered.

Jim

I'm really glad to hear that Rich was able to reconstruct the thread for Paul.  I too thought that was a fantastic thread.  In addition to purchasing one of the cars when Paul made the initial offer I also purchased some Natty Bo beer from a distributor in York during the TCA meet after the reefer arrived from Paul.  As luck would have it I didn't find anything at the show and you couldn't just purchase a single bottle of Natty Bo so I returned home with no trains and a small case of Natty Bo.  Basically, I traveled 650 miles (325 one way) to have a beer.

I am genuinely glad to hear this, Paul, and greatly relieved! I know you were very upset when this thread got accidentally deleted, and rightfully so. It was a HUGE mistake on my part.

See you at York.
