Well, thanks to you fellas and this forum, which I like so well, I spent the Christmas Season in a happy reunion with my Lionel 224E. Replacement of the brushes and springs resulted in a good running 224. It has run for almost three hours altogether, no problems what so ever. We will get a few more parts she needs to insure even a more longer life.
It runs as good as it did the Christmas Santa brought it back in '40 or '41.
