Hello everyone,

Pulled out my new in the box MTH 20-2784-1 Liberty Liner set from 2007-2008 to install a BCR2 before operating it.   Upon unwrapping the lead power unit,  I found one of these small metal pieces laying loose in the wrappings.   I could also hear something loose rattling around inside the shell.   After removing the shell,  I found a second small metal piece loose inside.   There were no loose or missing screws that I could see.   These pieces are not very big.   They are stamped sheet metal,  7/16" long,  1/8" wide,  and .025" thick with .060" dia. holes punched in them.   I have absolutely no idea where they go or what their purpose is.   If any of you MTH Tech guys or repair individuals know what these parts are for,  I would appreciate the help.   I don't want to operate the train until I find out.

LOL Marty,  that's about right!   I thought maybe some type of shims or spacers but for what and where.   I don't think they're part of any of the electronics assemblies,   but I also don't see anywhere they would be part of the motor/truck assembly.   Maybe a part from a 1940's flux capacitor.

I think those go on the underside of the trucks, under the journal bearing.  I had one loose on one of my Nickel Plate passenger cars.  If that is what they are, I believe they are staked on.

After reading your posting,  I took a look at some of my Premier heavyweight passenger cars with the six wheel trucks from 2008.   I believe you have hit the nail on the head.   The dimensions of my pieces match up perfectly with the pieces that are staked to the truck frame beneath each axle bearing journal.   How the hell they ended up inside my Liberty Liner is anyone's guess.   If not for your misfortune with the loose one,  this might have been one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time!-LOL

Marty,  what do you think?   It looks like a match to me.   I knew eventually that someone would have the answer.   I appreciate everyone's help.

Marty,

I agree with you 100% that the Liberty Liner trucks are completely different.   But after RAK's post,  I pulled out one of my Premier heavyweight cars and compared my mystery metal pieces to the pieces that are staked/pinned to the journal bottoms on the trucks,  and by looking at my photos above they are a perfect match.   Which still leaves the question on how did those pieces end up inside the wrapping/shell of my new in the box,  never operated Liberty Liner.   At least at this point,  I feel pretty confident that those metal pieces are not part of my Liberty Liner and got there by mistake at the factory somehow.   At either this weeks or next weeks club meeting,   I'll put it on the track and give it a run.
