I was given this well used Lionel #1666 Steam engine for repair by a coworker at the post office.

He claims the few repair shops in the area have a 3 week waiting period for repairs. Well I offered to take a look at it. As usual, the loco ran like a champ but needed a well deserved lube an Oil job.

I did notice two crucial steam chest mounting screws missing from this steamer.

My question is what is the part number for these steam chest screws, I beieve they are extra long screws with some space between the head and the threads.

Second what color are the jewels for the markers on the boiler front?

Anyone have a parts diagram breakdown of this loco?
Anyone know where I can obtain these parts on line?
finally, how difficult/need any specialty tools to replace the worn sliding pick ups? Thanks in advance.

The Greenberg manual for the early 2026, and for the 224, both of which are similar to the 1666, shows 6-32 x 5/8" roundhead screws for mounting the steamchest. I pulled out my first train, a 1666 that I've had since 1960, hand me down from my cousins, and it has 6-32 x 5/8" filister head. My pre-war 1666E has round head screws, but I put those in.
My 1666 is missing its jewels as well, but the parts list shows green jewels.
The sliding shoes don't require special tools. They are held in place by a flat spring which has a slot that engages a tab on the shoe. Use a narrow flat screwdriver and run it up on top of the shoe to lift the spring enough to release the shoe.

Hope this helps.

looking down at the holes, the hole is threaded.

can someone tell me what a "filister head" screw is?

Is this it?
