My printed catalogs finally arrived here today near Phoenix, AZ.
I am amazed at how nice so many of the steamers look really good to me. I can hardly afford one, let alone the 4 I really want to order. If I spent about $6500 on trains, I would be spending another $10,000 for a skilled divorce attorney and a psychiatrist! I really want a Big Boy, yet can't fit 0-72 into my new layout plan. H-m-m a hole cut through the wall into the next bedroom??? I actually ordered a circle of track to do some test fitting of the large curves!
From the ready to run catalog, I see big after market prices for the Maine Lobster Aquarium Car. I think many people collect aquarium cars, and will be waiting for set break ups big time. I suspect there might be another gem like that. Wish I could pre-order such a car. I hate paying inflated auction site prices to keep a series complete.
Still have not digested the whole set of catalogs. I was pleased for Flyer fans to see so many different Legacy Controlled engine offerings, prices aside.
The volume of ready to run sets knocks my socks off. I am sure Lionel is hoping to ink a few deals with the big box outlets, Walmart, Sears, Toys R Us, and probably as many more as they can get their foot into! I have to guess the production numbers can't be too high for each set on its own.
Noticed the lack of list price in the track and Christmas catalogs. I would hedge a bet it is because both might be around for a few years without many changes.
I did notice other than the N5B caboose, not much in truly new tooled pieces of rolling stock. This opinion based on just a quick glance, so jump on me if I am incorrect. Just noticed the new GLA twin bay hopper! I think the 86 ft. boxcar has been offered before as a heritage item for UP.
One theme that I think is great for the hobby is the many offerings of rolling stock either made in or assembled in the USA!
All in all, (again, price aside) I think this is a well balanced line of offerings, with items for the traditional operator and scale operator, and even a few items for the I only collect market.
Good job to the catalog team!
