“ NEW” SPIRITS IN THE SAN JUANS (audio 34 min. 39 sec.)

Imagine a cool crisp autumn day in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado. The sun is shining and the wind is still.  The leaves of the Aspen have turned gold leaving whole mountainsides painted with color.

In the distance, a narrow gauge steam locomotive is struggling up the 4% grade.  The whistle blows and echoes resonate off the canyon walls.  Another day, the air horn of the Galloping Goose #5, a vintage motorized railcar built in 1933, repeats this performance while the unmuffled exhaust stacks reverberate popping sounds as it glides downgrade.  These machines of decades past echo the sounds of the “Spirits in the San Juans”.
