Test ran my new 3rd RAIL BRASS O Scale Anniversary Series Great Northern M2 2-6-8-0 Sunset Model for the first time in conventionel mode the other day. It ran perfectly for a few feet in both forward and reverse (using direction button on power supply) and then shut down.  Traced the problem to bad wiring connection from power source to track..  Fixed that but when I turned back on the power supply the engine will only go forward when using the direction button or when cycling the handle on the power supply on and off. Put another engine on track and it went forward and reverse using button without a problem.

What should I try, thank you

Moving the PRG/RUN switch works in much the same way as moving the e-unit lever.  When you have the locomotive moving in the direction you want, slow it down without stopping, and move the PRG/RUN switch to the PRG.  It is now locked in that direction.

Check the PRG/RUN switch.  Make sure it is in the RUN position.  There is a note in Lionel instructions that the unit will reset to forward after any power interruption of 5 seconds or longer, so what you are experiencing is correct.
