Hello,

I just picked up my new PRR Atlantic as well.  I just wanted to confirm so I don't harm a new engine, you add about 20 drops initially to the hole where the whistle smoke comes out, correct?  Has this been working for you guys that have this engine?

Thanks!

Rob

Yes, that is correct. The manual is wrong, add fluid directly into the smoke hole.

Dave,

Thank you.  I tried to pull the whistle out of its hole to make it easier to add smoke fluid, but I can't get the whistle out, and I'm afraid to pull too hard so I don't break anything.  Luckily, I was able to angle the funnel enough so that the fluid would go down the funnel and into the hole without spilling anything on the boiler.

Also, do you know what the two small screws and rubber pieces that Lionel included in the packaging are for?

Thanks again.

Interesting discussion. Now, please try to figure out why this new loco will not run (stays frozen in neutral) when running with Conventional mode and the main smoke unit is turned on.

It runs fine when the main smoke unit is turned off.

My dealer is sending mine back to Lionel to hopefuuly figure out and fix.

My dealer had three of these babies and they all refused to run in Conventional when the main smoke unit was on.

Legacy, no problems.

Pretty sure the only folks to answer that one will be Lionel.

For sure, but I figure other folks may have found the same problem and establish that mine (and the other two) weren’t a fluke (which would be pretty freaky considering the odds).

I told my dealer that, if it were me, I would go ahead and sell the other two he has in stock since they run fine in Command and what are the odds someone else would buy one to run in conventional? If they did, he would then take it back and send it in to Lionel for repair.

Coincidentally l, when I recently painted the driver rims on my older legacy Atlantic, I hooked it up to a zw to turn the drivers and it would not run.  I wonder if it too has this issue.   I only run it with legacy command control. So to paint the rims I took it to my layout and just ran jumpers from the track and ran the drivers with legacy while holding the engine in my hand.  Just for the heck of it I'll check it out without legacy on my layout, smoke unit switch on and off, and report back later.

I ran my PRR version last night and my first impression was that it's going to be a great engine.

But I tried a little bit to remove the whistle and was unable to...thought it was like my Legacy K4.  I didn't spend much time in the manual.

The manual doesn't show how to remove the whistle, it's attached with a magnet. To remove mine if it gives resistance I twist it back and forth as I'm pulling up to remove it.

GunrunnerJohn,  I commend you for that.  Too many sellers are willing to send the customer out the door with an engine they know will need service.  Ebay has become their place to off-load some questionable items, and then they tell the buyer to see the manufacturer if there is a problem.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

In this particular case, the engine runs fine in Command. The odds that someone is dumb enough like me to pay top dollar for features they will never use (since I run Conventional only) are pretty poor.

I bet you can number the people who would run this loco in Conventional on your hands and toes. Really

I am actually embarrased to admit I would pay so much for features I will not use. If I wasn’t a huge Great Northern fan, there is no way.

I will stick with LC+ in the future.

Call it a “return to sanity.”

Dave,

I would still by legacy if running in conventional. I've yet to buy one lionchief engine.

To me, with Legacy I am paying a lot extra for features I wll not use. With LC+, I am paying a little extra but not nearly as much.

I wish they made pure conventional runners again and at a lower cost, but I know that loco has left the roundhouse for good.

Hi Dave,  my GN Atlantic has the same issue, so you are not alone.  I am not going to sent it in for repair,  I find I am using conventional less and less, and according to the manual, this engine runs in Legacy, Bluetooth, and with the LionChief remote. I have used the Legacy and Bluetooth, but have not yet tested it with the LioneChief remote.  So, with those options, it allows for the coupler to be used and all of the whisle and sound functions.  For that reason, I don't think many will want to go though all of the hassle on sending it back to Lionel for a repair.

The problem with the manual on where to put the smoke fluid in the whisle is a huge issue, and feel fortunate that this problem has been identifed in the OGR Forum so many thanks to you guys!

I took some pictures of inside the engine and tender.

Hi Dave,  from the picture above,  I assume those are two smoke units attached to the shell so that would confirm the need to put smoke fluid in both locations,  Thanks for all of your dectective work!

Yes, that is correct you can see both smoke units in that picture.

To clear up questions..

  • There are two separate smoke units in this loco. Add fluid to stack directly. For whistle steam, remove the whistle detail and add the fluid to the hole that the steam actually comes out of. Not the hole that the whistle detail goes in. The hole that the detail piece goes in now has a magnet to help hold the detail in place. Add 20 drops to both smoke units when they need fluid.
  • The tender tooling wasn't modified to have the rail/signal verbiage removed. There is no switch on the tender, only the volume pot.

To the customer with the issue with the loco running in conventional, please call us and we'll get it repaired.

Thanks

Dave, that was me with the smoke issue in Conventional. My dealer has already contacted Lionel for an RA on the issue and is handling it for me.

Thanks  for your concern!

What was the problem with the smoke on in conventional mode Dave?

John it won’t move out of neutral when smoke unit is turned on using Conventional operation. I have confirmed that this is an issue with other of the locos, not just mine. So Lionel will need to develop a fix. Dave Olson said that they will solve the problem if engine is returned to them. Mine is going back.

Thanks for the confirmation on the problem with Conventional running. We tried three units at my dealer, and they all exhibited the problem. Sounds systemic, but I imagine very few will really care about it since they, like you, will run in some form of Command instead.
