First, I could kick myself for not getting the cab 2 sooner, really love it.

Problem 1: recharging gets so hot you cannot touch the batteries. I have stoped recharging and am sending back for repair.

2: feedback does not work at all. Ill have them them fix that too.

3: Here is what worries me the most, when the back lit screen comes on I get a very loud whine like a screach, goes away when back lit screen goes out. is this

normal on all hand helds?

I have v 1.4

Thanks

If you even have the slightest feel of feed back, it will get better in the future...I promise.  The best way to tell it's working is using the brake/ boost button for braking.  You'll feel it there the most for now.

As Chris said there is a whine similar to the Miller Engineering Signs.

Hot batteries not good but since I do not use the charger I can't tell you how hot it should get.

Contact Lionel and let them advise you.

And CAB2 dose rock.

Thanks guys

Yep the batteries got so hot they made the screen get streaks up and down it untill it cooled then returned to normal. 1st and only recharge I did. I think I can live with the whine. Not even a little feed back. As stated in Lionel videos it should vibrate when turned on. Also set at M momentum as video as this is default. Nothing with brake boost or train brake.

I know Lionel will take good care of me so off it goes tomorrow.

My son also now wants one, It looks like a trip to train store this weekend!

I just received my new Legacy 990 March 26, 2012.  I hooked it up on Tuesday.  I didn't even put the rechargeable batteries in it that came with it!!!  At the time I happened to be recharging some rechargeable "Duracells" for in our outdoor solar lights.  So I used 3 of them!!! So far I haven't had any problems with them.  TTOriginally Posted by cbojanower:

1) There has always been a whine with the screen on, some hear it more than others, screech could be a problem

2) Feedback is so-so  are you sure its on?

3) Heat is a problem, have you tried a different set of batteries?

Update: just got the unit back from lionel, total of 6 days from me shipping to recieving it today... WOW. 1 replaced parts and board in base, 2 gave me a new hand held. ver 1.3. I dont mind as soon as they get upgrade chips im sure ill receive them.

After using cab 1 all week i did not realize how far better cab 2 is. I could not be happier with the product and the fine support that i got

yes martyE cab2 does rock

No argument here, I was just saying that he got two chips with his new 990 which had 1.4 on them, and he should still have them and gotten them back with the repair/replace.

ALSO...has anyone had some minor difficulty turning off the remote with 1.4 installed on the latest remote? Don't know if it is the remote or the software...

cjack---yes, I have had problems getting my remote to turn off also.  It seems like it's not going to turn off.  I've had to hit the red button a couple of times??  Thought it was me.  Originally Posted by cjack:

Yes. It usually takes about one second and holding it down for 5 or more seemed not to be recognized...but then sometimes it works. I read somewhere that Lionel service told someone to loosen a couple screws on the back of the controller...but I don't remember if it was this button or another that was in question.

I sent mine back for an upgrade and they messed up the charging circuit didn't work at all when I got it back but The nice lady said no problem she sent a shipping label and had UPS pick it up and now it works fine although I only turn it on long enough to charge the batteries and turn it off.
I also have a little EverReady quick charger that I can charge spares in without using the handset charger.

As Mike explained it to me over the phone the hand set has a thermal sensor in it.When the heat builds up from charging the sensor senses the heat level and turns off the charging circuit to let the batteries cool so you don't cook your batteries or your hand held LOL
There are alot of these sensors that are bad from the factory so you need to send it back . You can still use it till you send it back just put regular double A batteries in it and turn off the charging circuit(Switch is on the bottom of the base)

You have to send it back tell em about the other problems and they'll make sure the upgrade was done right.

cjack-Lionel told me to loosen the 2 screws in the back under

the CTC button for the turn off problem. Sometimes the fix

worked and sometimes it was still difficult to turn off.

I have a number of issues with V1.4 under another thread

in this same heading (How can I get V1.4 upgrade).

weird Mine doesn't make any sound just the usual blip when pressing the keys.
feedback on mine is not that sensitive but I really don't care. it doesn't affect the trains any so woopty I look at it as a gimmick.

I will say this because of the legacy hand held I tend to look for Lionel engines.
I like the fact that the proto 2 engines don't blink under a tressle, don't have to worry about them loosing a signal in a yard . I don't have to stick a memory module in the hand held or program the engine by hand BUT to me and this is just me compared to the legacy controller the DCS hand held is a antiquated feature less POS.

It even looks toy like. The thumb wheel is a PITA and I'm always forgetting this code or that. And to beat all when I think I got the right code I hit the train wreck.
What moron put that in there? Hey I've been model railroading for a long time and believe me if I want a train wreck I know how to get er done.

MTH needs a huge wake up call . their hand held needs a rotory knob throttle a plunger type whistle control and touch screen info per engine.

I think the Legacy system has far surpassed anything MTH is making Proto 2 or 3 doesn't matter Lionel is light years ahead .
