I  have only seen what has been posted online from the new catalog but so far I have seen nothing that catches my eye. The only thing I see are the very high prices. I don't usually complain about prices but Lionel must think we are all rich. My days of buying new may be over. But hey the used market is calling my name. 

So what will you buy?

I may have to trim some of this fat but..

The Frisco 4500 Meteor, Big Boy first run and the DM&IR “Yellowstone”. 

The freight sounds box cars, Great Northern and Illinois Terminal. 

Both Green Bay and Western reefers.

I like the BN F set, but I want the whole thing in cascade green so I’ll pass. 

The Bush funeral train seems like a good price (considering what the street price will probably be) for what you get. But I will probably take a pass on that two.  

I will also get one or two S gauge items.

Overall I was surprised at how many of the steamers really caught my eye.

Wow...  this catalog will be a big one for me...  it will take a while to decide what fits in my budget...  i can relay what catches my eye...

First off, the 4-4-0's look great.  I have not really been into 19th century trains, but studying these, the ornate decorations are really fantastic...  really drawn to these...

Then the Big Boy 4014...  i love the cab floor detail and the big boy sketched on smokebox.  This is cool to me because the bearing caps are silver and would look great lashed to my 844 pulling my excursion train.

Naturally the UP#4141 Bush Funeral Train set and all the UP excursion cars to expand my collection and train.  Looking forward to a 16plus car excursion train!

I am a fan of the EM1s.  Great engine in legacy!  I want the NP grey boiler this time around...

Then i want all the fantasy ATSF northerns...  Rock Island, DRGW, MOPAC, and the 4524 Frisco looks incredible.  Ive also been getting sweet on that ACL.  would love that on my eastern steam display case...  naturally love the Frisco 4500, but probably go with 4524.

The S2 and S4 switchers are really colorful.  Need the ATSF, but may also grab that sweet SusieQ.

The Rio Grande and Cotton Belt are my F7s for this catalog...

I gotta have the Great Northern Circus Ps1 sounds box car...  hope they do the series of them...

Probably more DTI box cars and 60ft Santa Fe auto parts box cars...

Oh yea, forgot...  the UP#1111 is mandatory for me...

Whew!  So much to choose from...

Not much for me. For sure a LC+ docksider and a LC+ GG1.  A lot of the stuff in the catalog is too large for modest sized layouts, so much is on the "ignore" list. A number of things missed the mark as far as paint schemes I want, such as no Great Northern F-7/3 in orange/green with black trucks, and no Rio Grande F7/3 with silver trucks. The Northern Pacific S4 would be of interest, but the previous TMCC version is already on the property, so probably that's a no-go.

freight. 2 flat wheels box cars. Not sure wich roads. Probably PC & GN. And a b&o I12 caboose

ill also probably do 1 big steamer. Not sure if it will be the chalked 4014, the in service b&o em1, or the blue goose. (It’s fake but it’s beautiful!)

That's funny.  I'd much rather spend my money on Lionel since I spend no money on MTH.

The only thing that caught my eye was the UP Excursion 2-Pack with the Lone Star Business Car. Lionel seems to have ironed out the difficulties that afflicted the first run of these 21" cars (although none of the ones I got, including all 7 of the UP Excursion cars in that run, exhibited any significant paint or similar issues). 

I don't think that Lionel has done a business car before let alone one in scale length. This will give me a surplus of end of train cars when added to the City of San Francisco dome observation car and the Fox River theater car but I can always run all three together in some kind of order!

Frankly, even if I had space I would not pre-order a Lionel engine these days because of QC concerns.

Haven't  really paid much attention to the posted images so will wait until I get a copy in my hands.

As a LC+ fan will definitely consider the LC 2.0 GG1.

And it would be one of the 5-stripe liveries. Tend to like the Tuscan but wonder how that color will come out in the end? That’s always been a problematic one to get correct. Have seen it range from the accurate hue to something resembling a pink. So maybe will play it safe and get green?

I have been  considering the Golden Spike engines since their announcement, but the QC situation is weighing heavily in my hesitance to drop that much money on 2 items.  The recent "all items affected" (or darn close to it!)  flaws in the Hobby Shops (missing pieces), PA1's (electronics that don't work), and the older well documented Mogul snafu are not helping my decision.

I really like the idea of these items and think they would be a nice complement to the previous BFOC, John Bull, etc, but I'm not overly confident right now.

I'm sure something will find it onto my list.  I already asked my dealer to sign me up for the 50th Anniversary Moon Landing commemorative boxcar(I am assuming they are in the catalog, but maybe just on the website? - dealer said they should be in in a couple weeks), and those LC+ docksiders look nice, so I might get one of those.  I assume there are probably a few other pieces of rolling stock I'll put on the list.

I was about to respond with a "but these 2 classes are close to the same size" - and they are - but I just threw a yardstick on my Lionel 3271 and my MTH 2903 and did come up with a difference of about 4", including tenders, which is where a lot of the difference resides. This surprised me, but I haven't run either for years.

Still, I wonder how much more "compact" the 3751-class loco will look, compared to the 2900's? Those 2900's - zowie. I do need to make my shelf queen PS-1 version an ERR command loco.

I may actually have to break down and get a Big Boy this time. Much as I would like the 4005 (duh), it will probably be 4014, as my rule for steam is, I have to have seen it under steam, in the Twin Cities.  Probably going to have to modify a few spots on the layout to be able to run it. The layout was designed before anyone made a Big Boy.

Gotta keep working on my excursion set, and the Experience baggage car. The Amtrak camera dome is a must have. It'll go great with my rainbow Empire Builder. It'll be a game time decision on the GN / BN F7's and the B unit. They are pretty, two of my favorite colors.

No freight this time, but I have plenty of that.

For me this catalog is high buck low volume. To each his own.

Just for the heck of it - I was curious - I looked up the Frisco 4-8-4's in Collias' book Frisco Power, to find out that only 3 of these locos were indeed oil-burners - 4500, 4501, 4502. You probably already know that.

Four 4-8-4's were preserved, per the book, and, oddly, 2 of them were oil-burners (4500 and 4501), and, to make matters more annoying, 4524 is indeed preserved, but it's a coal-burner. 

Oh, well - the model is of an ATSF 4-8-4 and tender anyway. How accurate could the "Frisco" version be?

I think my top choices are the Union Pacific #4141 SD70ACE and the Union Pacific #4141 60' Flag Boxcar. After that I will strongly consider the Youngstown S-2 and Penn Central Flat Spot Freightsounds PS1 Boxcar. I'll have to wait and see but I like the Chessie System l12 Caboose.

If I had more money than I knew what to do with:

Yes All of the engines I am most interested in besides the Cotton Belt F7's (already ordered) are sort of fantasy's. 

Frisco 4500 "Meteor" The engine is fairly close and it was an oil burner but that flat top tender just does not look good. 

Frisco 4524 was a coal burner

Missouri Pacific 2202 was  a coal burner

Rock Island 5100 is kind of a mix between 5000 class (tender - I have pics of 5051 and 5049 with a similar oil tender) but the engine looks more like the 5100 class. 

I already suggested to Ryan why not use the tender from the C&O T1 in the last catalog. That would basically fix the Mopac engine easily, Frisco 4524 - although the top of the tender did not have sloped sides and the 4500 would look much more correct. Just take the coal load out and add some plates and call it new tooling on the cheap. 4500 would then be a winner.

They did this sort of with the EM-1's in the catalog (mixing up the tenders) But only me suggesting these things will not get this done - need others to suggest it. I would go for all 4 if they did some simple fixes.

I don't plan on ordering anything from the catalog.  But to be fair, there is very little that I need to have, so it would have to be a real special item for me to pre-order.

I think the re-release of the I-12 cabeese will be a hit, as the ones from the original release go for a lot more than the original asking price on eBay.  I have a B&O one that I like very much!

I was shocked at the price for the 2-pack 18" ATSF heavy weight sets!    A two-car set lists for $400!!!  Even with the highly discounted pre-order price, the price is $290.  I purchased a NOS coach from the original release at this past York for less than $80, and I kick myself for not buying the baggage car as well!

Probably a B&O I12 cabin car, the 1955 - 1965 version; especially if it is easy to convert to two-rail. I had a brass one (Max Gray, I think) that I traded to a friend for a CLW SD40, now I wish that I had not. I also would like to get the baggage car with Bush's casket displayed but that may only be available in the funeral train set. I pre-ordered the MTH 4141 in two-rail and the MTH baggage car but it is only 72' car, the Lionel one seems to be an 85' car.

Nothing jumps out at me.  Not sure how many big boys and em-1 s we need.   But I guess it’s too expensive for something really new to be tooled anymore.  I’d really like to see something that has not been done by Lionel before or something really new.  Also no operating accessories which I love.  But it still has lots of stuff for people that missed them before.  So pretty good vol 2 catalog.

The hep equipment on the roof looks wrong too on the ocs, it's supposed to be two mufflers up there, looks nothing like mufflers to me.

This is a great catalog with probably the best toy train catalog cover ... ever.  I like what Lionel is doing with the product line.

A quick first pass through the catalog and I've found that "I need" (and will order) the Cotton Belt ABBA (beautiful black widow set), the SP S-4, and probably the SP and Santa Fe Disconnect sets.  More, later, I suspect.  

I liked the new catalog. I was hoping not to find anything in it because I bought a ton of stuff from the last catalog. But again it was not the case LOL. I still have to place my order but here is what I am getting.

After the fiasco with the first sound cars having repeated banging echo rather than flange squeal I'll have to hear these first. Was track side at an event with 9 trains passing in less than three hours. Sound wise the random flange squeal frequency far surpasses cars with flat spots in the consists. There will need to be a quick TMCC/Legacy way to turn it on and off rather than turning the car over.

I think this is a great catalog. If money weren't an object is be ordering a ton from it. That being said, it is so I'll have to limit myself. 

I plan on ordering the 4014 excursion version (although first run is cool), the 4141 funeral train set, and probably one odd the additional excursion car 2 packs. 

Stuff I like but won't buy due to money includes the Jupiter and 119 plus matching cars, ACL 4-8-4, NS OCS, Alaska RR set, and the Southern dome car.

Anyone planning to order the Bush 4141 without the cars, consider buying the set and I will take the cars. Given the pre order price for the set vs the engine and cars you will save a few bucks if we split the cost. You buying the set means you will have the warranty on the engine. I have no interest in a warranty on the cars. PM me if this interests you.

NUTHIN!! -That's new stuff  for all you well-off dudes...  For me, if it ain't used, ain't on ebay or auction, ain't available at a train show or swap meet, then it tain't mine! DCC or DCS? TMCC? Legacy? 'Lion Chief'? Sound? -NOPE! -Give me a good old fashioned open-frame motor where I can still hear the electric hum and buzz and still smell the ozone... Let me hear the actual real sound of small metal wheels click-tracking over tubular track and I'm in toy train heaven! I don't really care about fancy complicated bells and whistles nor the latest electronic gadgets. (And if I ever do, I can wait. -It'll all depreciate soon enough...  ;>})
