Well, being not a BB fan I suppose it really does depend on what exactly it has in it. I know from the prior offering I thought the depleting coal load was a little nuts. My thoughts were that the rubber would where out and tear eventually and probably be a pain to replace. Of course, those BB's that are currently out on eBay are extremely high priced. I believe several were $4000+ one being almost $5000.

That being said however, its the lottery eBay out there. I've seen some stuff very overpriced for what it is and sure others have as sell. Regardless of all that, someone will buy them very whatever reasons or not buy them for the same token.

I called into my LTS and yes, there's a new catalog waiting for me. I don't believe that there was some kind of barrier or rule that dealers couldn't hand out the catalogs until such date, that would be nuts. It is smart business for the LTS's to get them out as soon as possible to get what orders they can ahead of the deadline.

So, I'll get my eyes on it tomorrow evening and see what is tickling my fancy. I did see somewhere on here about the EM-1's and will consider getting one of them after seeing what all is offered and best suits if I go for it.

Sounds like another ambitious catalog attempting to provide a little bit for every niche in the hobby.  I can wait until the hard copy comes.  I doubt Lionel restricts storefront dealers from distributing catalogs.  Makes no sense, thus our getting in a high moral dudgeon about the nefarious early reports/releases may be much ado about something Lionel cares absolutely nothing about.

Consider this.  Giving storefront dealers the catalogs and letting them do as they wish 2-3 weeks before the on-line versions are available gives their storefront dealers a bit of an advantage compared with on-line only operations that Lionel has always tried to discourage.  I doubt it makes much difference these days,  as Charles Ro, Trainworld, etc. are both storefront and on-line, so you can always call and ask for a catalog.  There are children without enough to eat in our nation, so I save my outrage for bigger issues, personally.

As for dwindling enthusiasm, that is a sad fact of life in general.  Were you most excited about trains as a 10 year old on Christmas morning, say, or now in your 70s?  As Byron wrote, "we'll go no more aroving, so late into the night.....  The sword outwears the sheath, etc."  All things that gave us pleasure can become less exciting over time, and we just don't have the passion or energy for "X" as much as we did when we were young and the world was new.

I still enjoy the catalogs decades on, but, unsurprisingly, to me,  the intensity and desire to acquire stuff (not to mention space) are diminished.  Fun, but not as thrilling as once was.   So it's not about Lionel, it may be about me and you. .

There's a whole forum where disappointed, angry older men in the hobby complain about Lionel having betrayed them by having a few lemons in recent years.  What is really going on, at least in part, is clearly the curmudgeonly, self-involved disillusion that accompanies aging, at least in my experience.  It's not really Lionel, it's them/us, I believe.  If you read the comments of newer hobbyists and younger hobbyists the thrill of the catalog and the new trains is still very much part of their experience.  Please don't rain on their parade.  Life wears people down without help from the old/experienced.  Sermon over .

Thinking about it...  getting the catalog FIRST from your own personal guy you buy your trains from is great building relationship for all the dealers.

I like it better than just seeing it online.  I prefer the personal touch of my LHS to get the first look at the new catalog...

Absolutely Bob. I don't go just walking around the store pick up and pay. I will usually pop up to the desk and chat for a bit like some of the other regulars like myself. Talk other stuff not train related but always come back to that. I think we would all be poor human beings if we just came in and pointed out what we want, pay for and leave with nothing said. There is just something about talking trains, even if it is something you're not interested in much(like diesels for me, I like very few), but I'll still talk about it.

Gee Scott, why do you need Lionel to make these? You have your beautiful custom set already.

I would never have noticed the trucks were purple, if you hadn't said so.

I am happy with my custom set for sure, there could be room for a couple more cars if Lionel colors are close though.  Im glad to see Lionel offer this though, I bet next they will offer VIA Rail blue cars since Christine is currently busy on a set of those. Lol.

Since the PRR didn't have any dome cars and these cars are made of plastic, could the dome be pulled out and filled in so the car can made into a coach or a sleeper?

Seems like too much effort when there are plenty of other PRR cars available. Maybe there is a market for fantasy equipment but a Pennsy dome car in a 21" scale car is unlikely in my opinion. Pennsy did lease domes in the winter from NP and used them on Florida trains.  As far as I know they remained in NP paint.

Anyone know it Lionel is offering other auto-train cars in this catalog?

No, thats it. And no notes about more coming in the 2020 catalog... so I guess proceed at your own risk about getting the rest of the train.

You are not READING the catalog.  This page clearly says:  "paint schemes match existing and UPCOMING Lionel 21" passenger car sets".

So this is a NOTE about upcoming sets matching these cars.  These are Vista vision wifi camera video vista domes...

The Kenefick and Lonestar cars for starters on new tooling. The vision domes are "new."

City of Portland clearly called out as new tooling...  Harriman UP Vista Domes are called out as NEW TOOLING, but it could be referring to the buisness car in the two pack...

I can read it just fine. If you compare it to some of the previous "notes" Lionel has put in the catalog (including this one which specifically mentions UP1111 coming on a special flyer), the statement that it matches "upcoming" 21" passenger car sets is about as close to that CYA disclaimer inside the back cover as you can get. Upcoming could be next catalog of 3 years from now, who knows. And with all of these "expansion sets" that seem to keep appearing in subsequent catalogs, why buy a single car and hope for a set, when you'll probably be able to buy the set and then a bunch of expansion packs?

As far as the Auto Train is concerned, a set of passenger cars is useless without the auto racks (need new tooling) and the U36Bs (new tooling again). So, like i said, proceed at your own risk dropping $300 on a car that may or may not ever see a full train to go with it.

?  But Lionel IS making the UP #1111.  And it will be in a special. ? Confirmed it today with Lionel...

You said no mention of future matching pass cars.  Clearly there is...  if demand is there they could do the rest...

I like your enthusiasm Bob. Honestly, though I was hoping for something more unique. Northern Pacific 4-8-4 would have been nice. Use the coal tender from the FEF. Put the s3 pilot on it and you are close to a class A4. Give it a grey boiler jacket... now your talking.

Also for the sake of discussion., I believe we are ready for a newly tooled scale steam locomotive. A class PRR I1 would be great !
