I like your enthusiasm Bob. Honestly, though I was hoping for something more unique. Northern Pacific 4-8-4 would have been nice. Use the coal tender from the FEF. Put the s3 pilot on it and you are close to a class A4. Give it a grey boiler jacket... now your talking.

Also for the sake of discussion., I believe we are ready for a newly tooled scale steal locomotive. A class PRR I1 would be great !

I know Lionel has big plans...  they are doing great hybrids...  i would think they could do new steam more accurately with hybrids...  they just gave us new 19th century steamers...

I would like to see some more hybrids...

I just realized, that Lionel wanted everyone to go to there local hobby shop to pick up a paper copy. Since some of the stores are dealing with the downside of internet sales, Lionel wanted to encourage everyone by going to their local hobby shop by getting their paper copy 2 weeks early.

Bingo.  I think that's exactly right.  I went to a hobby shop with my daughter today.  This shop always gets their catalogs late.  They had a whole stack of new catalogs.  That July 22 date was a ruse all along.

If you have a decent one, for sure.  I do not.  By the way, Super O Bob, Electric Train Outlet is going out of business.  Bob Jacobson is really retiring.  Really: Electric Train Outlet

Wow about Electric Train Outlet!! I lived in STL for two years and he said he was retiring and selling then...15 years ago!!

I just got into O at the end of 2017.  When I told people I went to that store and the owner said he's retiring, they would laugh and say the same thing: "He always says that!" (Super O Bob said the same).  So I wanted him to know that it's finally, actually happening.

I seriously doubt this is to send folks scrambling to their LHS to get a "sneak peak.".  Fewer and fewer people have access to a LHS nowadays.  It's also interesting that the photo's of the catalog pages or product/price listings haven't been struck down like they were for V1.

All the catalog release does is create product buzz for an additional two weeks before the catalog goes online.  Products aren't going to get here any faster.

I'd be willing to bet Lionel's own store in the Concord Mall began offering the catalogs last Friday...

A CNJ 4-6-6T? First of all they didn’t exist in that configuration and at $1100 no less!!! The least Lionel could have done was make the proper 4-6-4T config and proper feed water heater. Correct bell location would be nice too.  These are all easy changes using existing parts. K-Line units will now come down in price. I’ll just buy one of them, make the changes needed and save +$600!

Picked up the catalog at a local store today, now realize that the 3 dome cars I was wanting are all camera dome cars and $329 each. No thanks!!!! I have no desire to have camera equipped everything.  I have 2 camera inspection cars already that I do not use the camera feature.  Lionel needs to offer the domes without cameras!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to look at the videos online of the new catalog.  I even started playing it as far as the first few pages and then turned it off. Maybe I'm weird, but I prefer to wait to get the catalog in my hands.  I remember the days when Christmas was nearing and you got the Sears wish book in the mail. There was nothing greater than sitting down and thumbing through that book for hours. While admittedly I don't have much desire for most Lionel products nowadays, there are occasional things that do catch my interest and I will end up purchasing. To me waiting for the catalog to arrive, and when it does, brewing a nice cup of coffee and sitting in the easy chair viewing it brings back that feeling and memories of when I was a kid and the Sears wish book!

Well, I picked up my catalog tonight, talked with Tony a bit while the rain fell(lots of flooding out there on the roads in NJ, I got lucky). Curious thing, they offer two NYC ESE passenger cars, a combine and observation. I didn't see any other cars out there. Anyone have an idea(or are they planning something?)?

I think these are the combine and observation that they offered a few years back with the four car set the did. The four car set shipped long ago but I don’t think these two cars ever did.

I spoke to my dealer on these cars. Lionel had these as a 2-pack in the 2017 catalog. Customers were mad that they had to buy a 2-pack in order to get the observation car. The 4 pack never had the observation car. Lionel is now offering each car as separate sale instead of a 2 pack.

Okay, these went with the E8's. Good news is I don't have to buy them as I didn't get any of those.

OK, what's with the N&W dome car in UP livery? I must have missed the memo on that paint scheme.

From utahrails.net :

Dome Coach -- 1 car
Pullman-Standard, 1958
Lightweight

Car
Number
Notes and Disposition
WAB 203to Norfolk & Western 1613, to Southern 1613, to Quebec North Shore & Labrador

Wabash 203 was built in November 1958 at the same time as UP 7011-7015, which were themselves the last dome cars built for Union Pacific. Wabash 203, and UP 7011-7015, were initially assigned to City of St. Louis service, with Wabash 203 being in full UP yellow and gray colors, but with its Wabash name spelled out in UP's distinctive red lettering.

Wabash was leased to N&W in 1964, and the car became N&W 1613 in March 1966. The car remained in UP colors, with Norfolk & Western spelled out, until it was repainted to N&W's Blue and Aluminum colors upon the cancellation of the City of St. Louis pool in (?). Sold to Central of Georgia 1613 in 1970, to Southern 1613 in 1971 after Amtrak brought an end to Central of Georgia's passenger service. Car sold during 1979 to Quebec North Shore & Labrador; repainted boxcar brown as QNS&L 13510; repainted in 1993 into a new silver and red scheme.

A surprising amount of HO in this catalog. I am surprised that Lionel is jumping into HO again as big as they are. Both previous attempts (1950s and 1970s) failed. Maybe the third time is the charm?

Well, HO is where brand loyalty isn't as prevalent as it is in O.  Given there are already well established product offerings for all interests it will be interesting to see if Lionel can gain a foothold.

It's interesting that according to the catalog description, the HO Berks are being upgraded to "prototypical pilot and front end details and additional boiler details and separate handrails."  Guess Lionel figured out that a relettered Polar Express basic Berk isn't going to cut it in the competitive HO world.  Wonder if it will also get full valve gear.

Most of the freight cars are descended from old Marx tooling that Model Power owned.  The have basic detailing that won't attract the serious HO modeler.  The Pennsy style caboose is ex-Model Power and the Harriman passenger cars are ex-Model Power knock-offs of MDC cars.

Ok I have a question about the showing of the up excursion cars. I see that there is a 3 pack and then a 4 pack. Both have the same price tag, but there is one car less I the 3 pack. What’s up? Also, when I looked in the Norfolk and western passenger cars the 4 pack is priced higher than the up 4 pack. Again what’s up? Finally, why did Lionel not show all of the cars in the packs like the Norfolk and western cars? Hope y’all can help.
