Hi all,

Firstly appologies if I have missed a specific "New Member" thread, please move to an appropriate thread,

A little introduction from myself,my name is Graham from Dublin Ireland,I have always had an underlying love for trains since my early years, with a small OO French SNCF trainset received from Santa , the trains then took a back seat and into my 20's I discovered there was a diecast construction, crane, mining model world, machinery was also another love of mine, one day I got an urge to look for a locomotive to pose as a load on a heavy haulage low boy set up,trawling the internet I discovered Atlas and MTH,I plumped for a UP GP60 dummy unit and was blown away by the model, even the box when it arrived, details, paint quality etc, stunning! My next purchase was an MTH BNSF AC4400 as I fancied a 6 axle modern diesel, and after a lot of confusion on my part as to what the difference between 2rl and 3rl,Premier and Rail King, fixed pilot etc,I got my hands on the engine for the same purpose as the Atlas UP GP60,but seeing at the MTH engine was powered I then bought some track and the basic MTH conventional transformer set up to see what it ran and sounded like, this then led to more engines and the DCS system and to where I am now

I bought my house in 2011 and from the viewing I had ear marked a bedroom(basements are a rarity in houses in Ireland sadly) as my model/layout room and got cracking on making the most of the small space I had,an oval with if I can remember correctly 48inch radius curves at each end with around 72inches of straight away between,I was able to add to one outer corner a small engine storage area where I want to add a work shop later and a spur to the inside of the oval,

My recent buys of late were two A,B,C,D,E sets of Atlas Gunderson Twin Stacks in Santa Fe and BN livery/scheme,added to my NOKL Twin Stack set that I managed to track down,I'm in the process of adding containers,I was told the atlas containers were amazing and that I would love them from they guy I was buying from, and amazed I was!! there is nothing that matches them in the 1/50 diecast truck world for detail and finish,

Here is a short clip of my first MTH engine BNSF AC4400 running with Twin Stacks, forgive me for the terrible quality of the clip, taken on my phone and lighting is something I want to sort out,Track is elevated off the tables about 8 inches to still allow for scenery etc for my diecast models

I'm looking forward to being part of this great forum and looking forward to learning learning learning and seeing layouts, locos and rolling stock of all sorts,

I am glad to answer any questions if anyone feels free to ask me anything

Very nice start to O scale with an around the room line. I am sure you will add more to it over time to build your empire. I too have a large oval and still adding parts for interest to the trains. About where on the BNSF are you going to follow. North/South West coast or somewhere in the middle?

Hi phill,at the moment I don't have any particular area in mind to follow,I'm hoping as I become more experienced and discover more and more of this wonderful hobby I can try base my layout off somewhere.

The engines I have on the layout at the moment are CN Dash 8-40,CN SD70M-2,BNSF AC4400,UP SP heritage SD70ace,UP DRG heritage SD70ace,Santa Fe SD70ace,Caterpillar SD70ace(I had to get this due to my diecast construction love)

The reasons behind buying these engines were purely based on,road scheme and the look or engine model I liked, hopefully in the future I can gain more knowledge of what to run together

Hi willygee, all my powered engines are MTH Premier 2 rail and unpowered engines are Atlas 2 rail, these are UP GP60,CSX SD40-2, Canadian Pacific Alco C630,I have the SD40-2 and C630 on display at the moment

I would love to add a large steam engine to my collection too but my layout comes very close to walls coming on and off the curves so there is the issue of front and rear over hangs,

The rolling stock I have are 3 full Atlas gunderson twin stack sets,NOKL,BN and Santa Fe,Atlas master coil cars,2 CN and 1 NS,2 Atlas trainman SP flat cars, not 100% sure of the length, and an MTH heavy duty flat car that I added scale wheels and Kadee couplers too, this was something I wanted to use with my cranes for heavy lifts etc

Very similar mfg mix myself. Mostly premier 2 rail scale, some Atlas. Middle of this video 2 rail 5 engine Multiunit..Atlas/MTH switchers end of video.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

Stephen those are some beautiful engines! and hand laid track? that is something I can only dream of doing,I have watch some tutorials on youtube on hand laying track, the time, dedication and patience involved is unreal but it pays off

Willygee, great video!! very very nice multiunit consists there, great mix of rolling stock too! I would have loved a two line oval to run side by side

Welcome to the forum. Very nice train in the video.

So if you can't run big steam then how about medium or small steam? A nice Mikado or a Pacific perhaps? But be careful they can sometimes be addictive. There is a small railroad here in southern New Jersey that is restoring a 0-6-0 and supposedly they will actually use it for freight when it is done so one or two steam locomotives could be prototypical for your future layout. Good luck and keep us posted.
