I work in this industry and have been to many oil terminals and refineries.

Here are a few pictures of the completed piping in the rack, the PGO tank in its concrete containment area, and the piping leading to the truck loading rack area. I will start building the furnace, distillation tower, flare and control building.

I have started working on the refinery section of the terminal again. Christmas events have kept me away from the model shop. Here are some pictures of the furnace and the start of the distillation tower.

More good stuff! Alan, how do you lay out your cones? Also, I noticed that you have a break in the circular rail which makes it easier to get the verticals correct. I'm seriously thinking about buying the Plastruct Petro Chemical plant model kit. Would you recommend it, or do it all from my own design?

I make cones by calculating the diameters and the amount I have to remove in degrees. I will cut them out of .010 to .020" styrene or abs. I will either lap the joint or add a backing strip and butt the seam on the cone.

If I were you, I would come up with my own design and make what you want rather than being limited by the kit. The plastruct refinery kit is actually based on a chemical facility rather than a refinery for oil.

Back to work on the model. I have completed the distillation tower and flare drum and I have started working on the flare structure. Here are some pictures.

You only had to wait a day for the completed model pictures. Here they are. The loading arms are not on the truck rack and the customer asked me to add a tank car rack that will run the length of the left side of the model.

Alan, I'm kind of coming in late (2-3 yrs later) in seeing the refinery. Wow is it EVER nice, especially the night shot. What is the overall footprint? What is the 455-derrick-like tower in the corner - is that part of a refinery, or just a derrick tower?  What is the rough total of man-hours into building one of those? Can any one without super-deep pockets afford one (that is, IF you custom-build for others) ?  REALLY love your work !
