I just picked up the new RTR Lionel Santa Fe Chief Set (6-30178).

According the the manual there is a switch to turn the RTR Railsounds on and off. On my loco, there is no switch, just the labels and hole for it, plus two screw holes. The floor model at the store had the same thing.

Has anyone else gotten one?

I'm trying to see if Lionel cut a corner at the last minute in manufacturing, or if it is just a bad batch.

That was my fear. I want to be able to use the horn and bell. The switch is supposed to do that. From the manual: Use the volume control knob on the underside of the locomotive to adjust the volume. Refer to Figure 9. Slide the Sound switch to the NOSND position to silence the diesel road. The user-activated horn and bell are not silenced.

I have a Lionel Whistle steam Berk with RTR rail sounds and you can only adjust sound via a knob and no switch is present. I had the older train sounds version and that had a switch and volume knob. I'm guessing the rail sounds is the same because it requires a short blast of the whistle for crew talk and is a pretty recent model.

Hope this helps and happy holidays

That's exactly how my Santa Fe FT unit from 2007 works.  Shutting the switch off allows you to control the horn and bell still, but without the engine or crewtalk noise.

I hope someone is still monitoring this thread.  I just got a new Santa Fe F3 set today.  There weren't any instructions in the box.  I see no sound switch (place for one though).  I don't see the volume control either.  Is there a hole somewhere for screwdriver adjustment of volume?  I'd like to up the diesel sounds.

Thank you!

I looked in some old instructions for another train and figured it out!  Yahooo!

Thanks anyway!!!!!

the ability to turn off the rail sounds and still use the horn/bell is no longer.  it's all or nothing.  the hole for the switch is just a remnant of a time when you had more options.  Inside the new sound board does everything so you can't fix this issue without replacing with some other board.  it's a shame because the constant sound is too much to bear but the kids miss using the horn/bell whenever they want.  luckily I have plenty of williams locos for them to play with.
