The motor is wired incorrectly.

The black wire on the right from the reverse unit to the motor brush is wrong. It should go to one of the coil wires.

The red coil wire wire should not be connected to the brass terminal screwed to ground on the left side of the motor.

Connect the red and green coil wires to the left brush connection.

The red and green coil wires should be wired to the switch, one on each terminal.

Power in should go to the right brush connection.

Follow the wiring diagram and your loco will run.

That Solder tab is supposed to be an anchor point for the single red wire and the black wire that are floating off to the side. This is to prevent the turning of the motor truck from fatiguing the field wire and breaking it off. Once you get it running, make that mechanical connection.

The white wire is supposed to be connected to the collector/rollers for power to the bulb and reverse unit, on the brush with the black/white wire(from the rollers).

The other black wire floating around there connected to the green field wire is supposed to be connected to the other solder tab between the brushes as an anchor point to prevent the turning of the motor truck from fatiguing that green field wire and breaking it off. Once you get it running, make that mechanical connection too.

Okay... as you can see I made the connection as you said. The engine runs only in forward,however, the e unit still doesn’t seem to function correctly. Sometimes power on and off and it will start in neutral position . Then direction handle and forward and that’s the only direction. I notice the drum in e unit does not drop down. Could the e unit be faulty??... Joe

That's a 101 style reverse unit, not an e-unit, it is forward & reverse only, no neutral.

Try it with the switch on top "off", push up on the solenoid(red arrow). The pendulum switches/alternates left/right - forward/reverse each time you push straight up at the red arrow. The switch on top just turns the solenoid on or off, it has no effect on the direction.



Attn: Rob .... I did as you said and sprayed with contract cleaner. Upon testing the loco it will operate as it should forward and reverse 2 or 3 times and then get stuck in the reverse position . It appears the barrel is energized in the coil and somewhat difficult to bring down. Once power is off  I can tap coil and it will drop down. I have reverse the wire connections as you suggested but no change. Is it possible solenoid is defective?? Still nice to see unit run ..if only for a couple of seconds.. thanks ..Joe

Hi ADCXRob  you got me wondering  would it be possible to make a 3 position e unit go  forward / neutral only ..? or reverse /neutral only.?

I thinking if you ground the one (say blue wire)to the field and both wires to the other brush side say yellows/blue)  . I think as  long as the field/brush wire is correct it will cycle  in that direction and go to neutral/ forward(or only reverse) when you hit the transformer control  button......daniel
