Hi all! New into the O scale world and I was gifted an MTH Premier Amtrak Surfliner Engine which has the protosound 1.
Now with that I went out and found four cars to match with it and another protosound 1 engine and got a Z-1000 transformer. I am unsure of my layout plans but do not currently have the room for a large permanent layout.
What are my options moving forward? Can I run engines with protosound 2 or 3?

Well, Glad to see your in the hobby. I would limit future engine purchases to Proto 2 and 3. The early version can be problematic and I am not sure if it is still supported by MTH. Boards can be updated to 2 and 3 if needed. See what others say. My Big Boy with Proto 1 worked well

Only reason I got the Protosound 1 engines is that they are both F59PHIs in the Amtrak Surfliner livery, one of my dream trains to own and coming from HO i could never find them.
I did see a proto sound 2 engine for 500 bucks! But I have two of the P1 engines, maybe I should get them upgraded.
Only upgrade if necessary, you should be fine. I use the Z4000. Great transformer
Okay, so maybe for now I should just stick to my PS1 engines and run them as going to PS2 or 3 would be very costly and uneeded for my setup. Also the surfliner engines are hard to find in PS2
If you're happy with conventional transformer operation and the engines run well, there's no reason to rush out and upgrade them.
