The Reading and Northern 4-6-2 was originally Gulf, Mobile and Northern (a predecessor to the
Gulf, Mobile and Ohio, along with the Mobile and Ohio) number 425. The GM&N, a small, regional
carrier, ordered two such rather modern Pacifics for passenger service between Mobile and
Jackson, Tennessee. They were renumbered 380 and 381 - I believe - after they became
GM&O locomotives. As the 425 ran in and out of my home town under both its numbers (before my time), I would take about 3 seconds before calling and placing an order were anyone to offer one in O scale.

The loco was never painted blue during its original working life. I guess that it's marketing,
but why that makes it more appealing, I don't know.

But - at least it exists, funny color and all.

As for the blue paint...

IIRC, a long time former Reading engineer had convinced Andy Muller (owner of the engine and the RBMN) to paint it blue as a nod to a few blue painted Reading engines. Obviously, the blue paint stuck but this current paint job is a much lighter shade of blue than in the 1990s when the engine last ran. That is it in a nutshell pretty much. Anyone is more than welcome to make corrections if I screwed up. I also love that Reading 6 chime passenger whistle.
