Announcing the 7th in a series of beer cars from the NJ Hi-Railers.  This is our 2021 H.C. Bohack 40ft Atlas Master Line Wood Sided Reefer

We have changed our manufacturer for our beer cars This production will be from Atlas O due to MTH's uncertainty.  Atlas has provided a fourth quarter 2021 delivery date for these cars

Bohack Grocery Stores were ingrained in the lives of New Yorkers and could be found in all five (5) boroughs and on Long Island. In the early 1900’s most New Yorkers knew a family member or friend that worked at one of the stores. Bohack stores were as much grocery stores as social outlets. You could visit you mom, dad or a friend working at the stores and store managers understood that one of the keys to the success of their store was the sense of community that Bohack’s supplied to the neighborhood. This was a family run store and the sense of community lay at the heart of the Bohack’s shopping experience.

Bohack had their own special products from cheesecakes, fruitcakes and a whole line of food products including apple sauces, white bread and their own coffee sold in tin cans ((think A&P Eight O Clock Coffee) which were sold under the Bohack’s Best Brand.  Some items were produced under license from other manufacturers  One of those was Bohack Beer and Bohack Premium Beer (Ale)  These were brewed by P. Ballantine of Newark New Jersey  Ballantine brewed the beer in Newark until 1972 when Ballantine was sold to Falstaff beer.  Falstaff closed the Newark Brewery and moved all brewing to Narragansett in Rhode Island

Bohack went out of business in 1977.

The NJ Hi-Railers are offering two (2) cars with two (2) road numbers. The road numbers are in memory of our departed member George Habedank.  His birthday and date of passing.

Ordered my pair early this morning after I received an email from the HiRailers... growing up in Brooklyn in the early 60’s, I went shopping many times with my parents to the Bohack on Nostrand Ave. and Avenue L. And my first Lionel Train set came from a toy store called Thrift Town across the street!!! Really looking forward to receiving the cars.

Thanks!   If anyone else wants to receive the announcement emails you can register on our website home page (www.njhirailers.com.)  You'll receive a confirm email.  Just click on the confirm link and that's it!

That is a great looking car. But I wish it was one of the MTH 36 ft. wood-sided reefers to go along with all my others. Do understand why you guys switched to Atlas given the MTH situation when these were made.

MTh wasnt taking any orders when we sent this one in or it would be a 36 foot reefer   We didnt like the Atlas 36 foot reefer because of the ancient undercarriage detail so we went with the 40 footer  The Atlas 40 foot woodside reefer is a work of art

Hi Ben,

Ordered my Bohack car set. As the saying goes, “The check’s in the mail.”

Bohack holds a special place in my memory for a couple of reasons. First, of course, is shopping with my mother at our local Bohack’s in Valley Stream, which was only a short distance from where I grew up. It was just south of Sunrise Highway on Rockaway Avenue, the village’s “Main Street.”

But a more vivid memory is of their headquarters and enormous facility in Queens, on Metropolitan Avenue, near its intersection with Flushing Avenue. In fact, the intersection of Metropolitan and Flushing avenues was called “Bohack Square.” (Today, there’s an office building just east of there called Bohack Square.) My dad owned a small auto repair shop on Flushing Avenue, a half-block west of Metropolitan Avenue, the back of which was directly across the street from Bohack’s corporate headquarters building, see attached photo from an internet site on NYC history. (Dad’s building, which he leased, is still there; today it’s a body shop.) The Bohack headquarters building only recently—less than ten years ago—was torn down. But long after Bohack ceased operations the building’s facade still had “H.C. Bohack Co.” above the front doors, see the second photo. Bohack had a huge facility there, which received freight cars—mostly boxcars and reefers—full of meat and grocery items daily. When I was a kid in the early-/mid-’60s, when I’d go to work with my dad on Saturdays and during summer breaks from school, I used to love watching the trains cross Metropolitan Avenue and head into the Bohack property. There was even a Bohack restaurant near the same intersection. The third photo is from a Google image dated November 2020 of a chimney on Flushing Avenue, just off of Metropolitan that clearly still shows the Bohack name on it, more than 40 years after Bohack’s demise.

I look forward to getting my cars. They'll always bring back memories of my childhood.

Stay well.

Chris

Team,

As many of you know, The NJ Hi-Railers website has been experiencing significant issues over the last few days. We are working on resolving the issues with our service provider and do not currently have a date when those issues will be resolved.

Our apologies to those that have been trying to order the Bohack Reefers.

I am uploading a order form. It has all the details required to place an order. Please complete the order form and send your check made out to the NJ Hi-Railers. The prefered payment is a check which will act as your confirmation of your order. I will take PayPal while the site is inoperable if requested.

Any questions please send an email to me at kbmkam@aol.com, please cc NJHirailers@yahoo.com.

Thank you in advance for your continued support and we apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

I have a lot of older bill board reefers most by Atlas some of the old K-Line that I have collected over the years. They look great in a colorful long train. But your design here is certainly one to order, that is a great looking colorful design.

By the way The Canadian Toy Train Association is also running an unique Moosehead Beer car custom run.  https://www.canadiantoytrains.org/

Moosehead.   One of my favorites.  Do you have artwork yet.  When can we order

All,

As Ben pointed out the Bohack cars have arrived. I gave Ben a few so he could post pictures on the forum and by the comments above they are being well received. Thank you all for your support.

I am getting quite a few emails as to when I plan to ship them to those that have purchased. Due to a packaging error, I need to repackage everyone unit that has arrived. New packaging was expected today, however that has not happened. Therefore, the new plan is to repackage and ship next week once the new packaging is delivered to me.

To reduce the turn time I have prepared the shipping labels and assembled a packaging team of NJHR club members to assist me so once we get boxes we will repackage and send out ASAP.

My sincere apologies but there is not much that can be done at the moment.

Kevin

My very first solo shopping outing with my son, was to a Bohack Supermarket, a block away from where we lived, in the Borough of Churches (Brooklyn, NY). His head was on a swivel. Watching his eyes pop was the highlight of this normally boring shopping expedition. Almost pulled the trigger on both of these, but held back. Don’t need to add beer cars to my list of “must haves”. Good memories, though.

Holy cow, Paul, I didn’t read any of the posts before today! That was the Bohack to which I brought my son! We probably were contemporaries in time and geography! I went to OLHC grammar school!
