Just received my MTH Club Diesel, a Railking Imperial model, 30-20256-1, after about a years wait. I unpack it, looks great, I take off the part of the top that hides the smoke and sound adjustment screws and go to make sure the DCS/DCC switch is set to DCS.

To my complete surprise, there is no switch !!!!  The housing for the switch is there, same housing that surrounds the screws for sound/smoke but it is missing from the rectangular hole and the 2 screws are of course also missing--just the rectangular opening through which the switch would have protruded with two empty screw holes at each end.

Naturally, I'll call MTH but has anyone ever received or heard of a brand new model being sent out of the factory with this switch missing?  Of all the things to be missing ???

PS, I rechecked on the bottom of the diesel to see if I had missed the switch down there but don't see it and the manual that came with the engine shows all three things (volume, smoke, DCS switch) all in the same place.

Yes, MTH has stopped putting the DCS/DCC switch in engines (at least Railking engines, not sure about Premier) as many engines were set to "DCC" and being returned due to "not functioning" when all they had to do was throw the switch. All new ones come hard wired in DCS mode but can be switched to DCC somehow.

Thank you all for your really prompt replies. Great to know as I now feel I can power it up.

Just got into the hobby about a year ago with a ready to run MTH unit (PRR freight). Although it's up north now and not available for me to look at, I could swear that I remember seeing a DCS/DCC switch on it.

Thanks again for the help. Today I went to the website for the diesel documentation PDF and sure enough the absence of the switch is spelled out there.

What is a little irritating is that if you'd like to have a switch to easily switch back and forth from DCS to DCC you have to BUY one from them!!

Well, thanks again to chessie, Barry and SJC.

Thanks, rtr12. You're probably right about that.  Still, in a $350 product it would be nice to have the flexibility.  Of course, it is a "Railking" not Scale or Premiere.  But it seems to have very nice detail even though it is 2 inches shorter than the Premiere version of this diesel.

What I really have buyers regret about is paying that kind of money for a "Club special" which puts the company's logo on my layout.  In effect, I have paid them for the privilege of publicizing their company.

When I have some time I may try to find someone who repaints engines, etc.  I realize that the engine would still come up in DCS as it was built, not how I paint it.

But I think I read in Barry's book about renaming engines.  Well, I keep learning...

Thanks again.
