Hello,

I have a steam engine PS2.0 3v item #20-3343-1,the sound is completely mute,

however all the others functions work very well.

Test Performed:

Volume pot

Remote via menu sound and buttons

Features reset, Factory reset

Speaker via Protocast  unsuccessful no sound

What other options would be explored ?

Reprogram engine sound file... but no sound via protocast/speaker ?

Thanks for your help.

OK, so we suspect bad speaker. That's not unheard of and sadly more common than you might hope to find a bad speaker.

Primary cause was impurities in the magnet oxidize and just like zinc pest, it begins to deform and crumble. Because of the tight tolerance to the voice coil- this can rub through and short the voice coil. Any flaking or deformation are signs, but again from this time era, they can be bad and not be obvious, where others are plainly obvious and not yet shorted.

Worst case scenario- the bad speaker shorts the voice coil to frame ground= damaged audio amp IC on the PS2 board.

PS2 3V uses a 4 Ohm speaker.

PS2 5V (older with the 9V battery) used 16 Ohms

PS1 uses 8 Ohms

Also,  should say, measuring just Ohms is not enough to determine good speaker vs bad. Since a speaker does have to move and move freely- it takes multiple tests- yes, basic resistance, across the coil, but also check for coil to metal frame short, and last, even a bad speaker that is jammed and won't make much if any sound- could test OK electrically.
