I believe I am having the same problem as the OP.  I have a new (Christmas) TIU (rev. L), WIU, and a new PS3 steam engine, this is in HO scale, and an android tablet with the premium app installed (and on the MTH network).  The WIU firmware has been updated, the TIU is updated to version 6.1.  I am using a 16V DC transformer in at fixed #1.  I have used fixed 1 out to the track. Then when that did not work I used fixed 2 out.  Either way I can not add an engine.  I am just using a small loop (5'x4') of clean track.

The PS3 engine starts when power is on: lights, smoke, sound, & talking.  I used the app to add an MTH engine and no engine is found.  I am able to run conventional engines, using the transformer for speed control, while it is setup to go through the TIU.  All this tells me I have good power to the tracks.

I have both of Barry's ebooks, following them as best I can with trouble shooting, but I am at a loss.  I have invested a lot for this new control system.  It has so much to offer, but I can't run a PS3 engine yet.

Any advice?

I'll suggest a few things you can check on first off do you have another ps-2/3 engine to see if they work using  dcs on your temporary track ?

is this a steam engine if so is the plug from rear of steam engine to tender connection nice and solid or is it a diesel engine?

are you using a variable channel 1 or 2 or a fixed 1 or 2 channel on tiu?

is variable channel 1 or 2 set to fixed?

check all connections to electronic boards make sure a solid connection to all.

am sure one of the more knowledgeable techs will see this and respond with more help.

and lastly can you provide the item number for this engine as it will help the techs help you better knowing exactly what engine they are dealing with.

good luck

Petvet,

The PS3 engine starts when power is on: lights, smoke, sound, & talking.

One thing that fits the symptoms is that the engine's DCC/DCS switch is in the DCC position rather than the DCS position.

I was trying to showoff my trains to guests last night and my locos were starting in conventional ... after checking many things, I plugged in a Z500 transformer to the Aux port of the TIU and all is working again.

Both fixed channels being powered by Lionel PowerHouse 180 watt bricks.

I set this system up about 3 years ago ... why do I need to use a transformer now ?

hi please explain how you hooked up the tiu to transformer originally   ??if you powered up fixed 2 you must use the aux jack but if you powered up fixed  one it should have worked let us know when you check your wiring over!

About three years a go I powered both fixed channels using plugs with two Powerhouse 180 watt transformers. My layout has been working without issues all this time until yesterday. Now with the Z500 plugged into the AUX port of the TIU it's working as it should again ... not much more to say.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Here are some answers to questions above:

I do not have any active or inactive engines listed to delete and try adding again.

The HO steam engine is 2-8-0 H10 #103 item #80-3243-1. I have no other MTH engines to try. My conventional engines work when I use the power pack's throttle.

I have tried a few ways to supply power.  I used only through fixed #1 input and output at first.  I then added power through the aux. power, and left the Fixed #1 powered.  I then switched to power Fixed #2 and used the #2 output to the tracks (leaving the Aux. powered). I have not used the variable inputs/outputs.

I have the DCC/DCS switch found under the tender toggled to DCS.  I have tried it both ways. The connection to the tender is a good one.

Still, the app shows no engines to add.

More advice?
