My Android pad keep losing contact with the WIU.  Using the WIU interface I can see that the unit is on the wireless unit.  It appears the it is connected to the TIU.  I can ping the WIU through the network all the time while this is going on (-t).  I can ping from the tablet to the WIU.

I have 6.1 in the TIU and 1.1 in the WIU.  I have the latest Android app as near as I can tell, at least I downloaded it today.

I'm totally lost!  It seems to me that the WIU is bad!

Any suggestions?

I had similar issue.

Last Christmas, Dcs impressed me on my tree layout.  I hooked up the brand new TIU and WIU and it worked immediately.

This year not so much. The WIU would not link up Wi-Fi in mth mode. The blue Wi-Fi light would light for a second and turn off. Finally after numerous tries and changing to home mode and reset, it worked. Could have been operator error but I have no idea what I changed to get it to work.

I'm too am experiencing the same issue and it appears to be transient, despite multiple approaches:

  • Using MTH SSID (MTH_DCS-365C)
  • Using Home SSID with WIU connected to home network via Wifi
  • Using Home SSID with WIU connected to home network via ethernet

I've confirmed no network issues by keeping a constant ping running both from the phone as well as from the WIU (you can SSH to the WIU using root user).  Confirmed no firewall between the Android device and the WIU, and the connection issues occur on multiple Android versions and devices:

  • Google Pixel - Android 8.1 Oreo
  • LG G4 - Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Samsung Galaxy S2 - Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Android App Version: v3.1.0, build 49

DCS Firmware: v6.10
WIU Firmware: mthdcs-v1.1rc1-1-gd26bd7d Release (git-15.205.28457-77acfe0)

It's pretty frustrating, especially given how transient connectivity appears to be.  I'll be controlling trains/tracks and mid control will lose connectivity.  I've had multiple instances where I've had to pull power completely from the TIU just to stop the trains. Hopefully MTH is able to run this through QA to identify root cause - I'm happy to provide logs to the team if they request it!

In general, if the issue is a loss of connectivity between the smartphone or tablet, and the WIU, then the first thing to try is to connect in MTH mode to rule the router in or out as the culprit.

You can ping the WIU all that you like, however, that will not rule out the router as the issue. Simply because the router can find the WIU is no guarantee tha the two can actually communicate. This is true for either a wireless or wired connection.

Further, it would be helpful to know exactly what steps were actually taken to resolve the issue, other then just doing the same thing over and over again.

Just curious how managed to verify the communication (ping) when connecting the phone directly to the WIU in MTH Mode. There are apps that can do this, but they can also be the cause of communications not working between the devices in question while trying to use the DCS app.

Any time your router is in between two devices on a home network, yes it can act as a firewall. I had to run down a problem similar to this in the IT world for an ActionTek DSL modem / router combo and a feature called AP Isolation was enabled.  It allowed all of the devices on the network to communicate to the internet but not with each other.

The wired method would definitely rule out the WIU as the wireless communications are now only occurring between your router and phone. If something is up with your router, it may be dropping the wifi or not passing the communications to the WIU via the wired connection.

To confirm, when you connect to the WIU to your home network, you should have the WIU in MTH MODE.

One thing I've done on my WIUs & phones, is assigning static addresses for each device to use on the network. This ensures each device is always using the same IP address and reduces the chances of an IP Address conflict. Not to mention the boot up of everything is just a little bit fast as my phones / tablets and WIU are not waiting for the router to configure an IP address via DHCP. TO be clear this done on each phone / tablet and within the LuCi interface on the WIU. I do not use the static IP address assignment within my router as this still requires each device to request & receive an IP address from the router each time it connects.

More networking information is needed. Make & Model of the router would help, and screen grab of the current wifi channels in use wouldn't be bad either.

There is a logical explanation for your issues, getting the answer can be tough, but we'll do it!
