Yep, I was 6 years old, loved it. For a little more nostalgia, you can see reruns of the shows on the getTV channel. Looks like Saturday afternoons at 1:45 eastern.
My favorite show. I was in kindergarten and I drew a picture of the Cannonball Express that my Mom kept for many years. That would have been 1958.

I think I'd be afraid to watch it today. There's something depressing about watching one of your favorite TV shows from your youth and realizing that it wasn't that good after all. So many of those shows from the '50s haven't aged well. I think it was my love for this show that inspired my parents to get me the Lionel General set for Christmas several years later.
I watched it and remember the Lionel commercials that sponsored it.
As far as kid's shows not aging well, I was a big fan of "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger" back in the same time. When I saw an episode on YouTube a few years back, I enjoyed it just for the campiness of it. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
A few years later, but I used to like Lost in Space. To @Joe Connor'a point, years later they released the reruns. I was initially excited but after watching one or two episodes, I realized what a silly show it was.

It was a truly awful show. And that is how I viewed it in 1958, as a kid !!! But, at the time, I was seeing big time Burlington steam (3001, 5618, 5632, 4960) on fan trips, and that pablum just paled.
I watched it way back when the Earth was cooling, along with Rescue 8, Sky King, Whirlybirds, Commando Cody, Rocky Jones and Captain Midnight. Not exactly Masterpiece Theater, but as Doctor Science calls it: "Our Ignorant Past."

That IS the Skipper. Alan Hale Jr. played Casey Jones and later on The Skipper on Gilligan's Island. Alan Hale Sr. died in 1950.
The Casey Jones I grew up with was a Disney animated short film produced in 1950. I caught the full short on my American Legends package film produced by Disney in 2002. But, when I first watched the short on the old Disney Channel, I was so scared of the train crash scene, that it made me hide away from it. Now, I can handle seeing the train crash scene, since I'm 26 years old. But, it is a pain to see Casey's engine wasted to the splintered cab, wheels, and remaining parts.

As a result of my favorite TV show, I also asked for the Lionel General Set in 1959 and got it.
