So everyone, Last week, I saw NS 999 sitting in the Roanoke shop area on a display track next to a road. The four number boards are out of the unit. I understand that it was up for auction in Roanoke at one point, but subsequently taken out. I also understand that this unit was a failed prototype that had 1.4 million dollars spent on it. Why is this piece of unique equipment just sitting instead of maybe being used or at least revised? I think that technically, if NS wanted, they could return this to service atleast as a shop switcher, or trade it to Amtrak for the grand central terminal and penn station tunnels, could they not? The last part, I’m just thinking out of the box for uses of this locomotive.

Maybe because:

  • It's an oddball unit.
  • It wound up being more trouble than it's worth.
  • Or it didn't live up to expectations.
  • And because of the above it's not worth sinking any more time and money into it.

Sometimes things don't work out.  Shelve it and move on.
