Hello all: I have just tested a Lionel NYC Hudson that has not run for 55 years. After lubing the gears put it on the track, and ran like the day my Father brought it home. Very pleased to have this engine. It takes me back many, many years.

Yeah. They were household appliances. I'm a big fan of the new stuff, but those older steamers can still impress with the quality and durability.
Which Hudson is it? Cab number?
What does that tell you about the postwar stuff compared to the modern stuff?
I'm glad it runs for you Rich. I'm sure there are a lot of fine memories.

It was stored for 55 years, not run for 55 years. Means nothing relative to durability. Any modern steamer that's running fine now (and doesn't rely on a battery) would do the same if it was properly stored.
That's not to say this Hudson isn't well made. And the nostalgia element is hard to beat.
Maybe not. Grease congeals, and oillite bearings seize when left stationary for a long time. He was lucky.
