Did any Hudsons escape the scrap yard?

No, not one!

I’d drive several hundred miles to see one of these monsters up close.

Don't know that I would call them a "monster", since the Burlington Hudsons were about the same size, or slightly bigger, and more than one of those exist. Now the Santa Fe Hudsons were quite a bit larger than the NYC Hudson, and there are some of those saved.

The closest thing I can think of on the east coast and maybe Jack can confirm or correct me, would be the C&O’s Hudson at the B&O museum …….but Jack is correct, no NYC Hudsons were spared the scrapper’s torch,…..2 Mohawks did survive, one in Elkhart Indiana, the other in St.Louis ,….which, if you squint really hard, and look at just the front, it’s the spitting image of a J class Hudson,…😉

Maybe it was a while back, and correct me if I’m wrong,…but I thought they did raise enough funds for a cosmetic restoration, ….which of course is like putting lip stick on a pig,…🤣🤣🤣

I believe I saw somewhere that they had or were doing it, but don't remember if it was done. I think you are right on the C&O bit.

I believe there was a video at Elkhart where the person in the video stated that 3001's tender is actually the one behind the one behind the engine. He had said it was in storage in PA I think quite some time before ending up at the museum and the building caught fire. The tender got warped in some fashion which I believe he illustrated by looking closely at the rivets and such. I don't remember what engine's tender is directly behind 3001, can't remember if he said. Only NYC Hudson's we'll see are the models there or on our layouts(or shelves).

Dave, all of the J1’s were delivered with class lights. Same lamp housing and brackets as the Mohawks, as the Central proper adopted system wide train control, the class lights were later removed ( except engines assigned to Big Four territory)

Yeah, but Rick said 54....33. That's a J3 and shouldn't have them, right? That's what I was on about. Of course J1's do. I think we have covered class lights on Hudson's for about a few years more than I've been on here. I think Hot Water has given at least 6 lessons on class lights that I have seen since joining. 🙂
