While the switch may take up a little less room, I like using two push buttons.  I really like illuminated buttons as you don't need any more room for indicator red/green lights.  If you're into building a little circuit you can also use a single button where each push will throw the switch in the opposite direction.  While a little uncommon, there are even push buttons with bi-color LEDs in them so a single hole in the panel could give both remote control and signal lights.

I asked for help on the Electrical Forum here on OGR last month.  After getting some advice I made this video of my test.  I have ganged 10 of these little Atlas controllers in the space that 2 Lionel standard controllers.  It takes patience but they work and then I also hooked up to  an AIU based on advice in Barry's MTH DCS book.
