Just getting started in outside railroading.  Can someone help me find outside O guage track.  Where is the best place to get it?  Also, I don't know if I can explain this or not.  But when you have one main track going around your yard.  And your wanting to be able to run different trains on it.  How do you switch to the train you want to run while the rest of them are setting there.  I can't explain it like I want to.  But maybe somebody will be able to tell what I'm talking about.

There are really only two types of O Gauge track that are suitable for outdoor use -- Atlas Nickel-Silver and Gargraves Stainless Steel. Both will eventually have issues with the plastic ties over time (need to be UV-treated periodically), plus there are thermal expansion/contraction issues. There are also electrical considerations with respect to track joints, but people have overcome these.

This site should help some: https://familygardentrains.com...ge_outside_index.htm

I've been in touch with both Bob Canfield and John Blessing regarding their outdoor experiences and they did have some ups and downs.

Ron Karlsson built with Atlas track and PVC elevated roadbed. His YouTube video on the first layout is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?...XzN2vz2OU&t=720s. He has since take that one down and built another one using the same techniques and more elaborate scenery.

Hope this helps.

I know most of country is deep freeze now, but come spring time.  A outdoor layout is very doable. I have had an outdoor layout for over five years.  My current one was started in 2016 and is coming along well, I have two main loops and a water feature.  I began a video series from the beginning on YouTube. Check it out sometime https://www.youtube.com/user/sjbuff

I also have a new website where I get into more detail on the how I built my outdoor o gauge layout.  www.oscaletrainsbyron.com  I'd be glad to discuss ideas with others interested in the o gauge outdoor layout arena.

Here is an aerial  view of the layout.

I will be watching this thread!  I decided last summer to do an outside O gauge layout as soon as it starts to warm up here in CT.

MY plan is for a 7' x 15' raised layout.  A modular block wall will raise the layout about 18" off the ground.  My plan for track mounting will be different than others I've seen... an outdoor rated plywood top for the whole layout with cutouts for plants, mulch etc.

It will make more sense once I start and provide some pics.... I plan on using Atlas track.
