Hi All,

Can anyone explain to me the benefits and deficits of building my O-Scale layout using L-Girder design? (thickness of wood used, etc.). Are there better ways to go?? I used it while in HO scale and loved it but I am unsure about the strength needed for O-Scale. There are times that I will need to crawl around on it (200lbs). I am in the early plans of building a 13x27 foot layout. Track planning is in progress although filled with challenges considering all that I want.

Also, I would appreciate it if anyone had a suggestion on videos or youtube that would be valuable to watch building with L-Girder. The ones that I have found have not been that impressive.

Thank you for your considerations, and, stay safe.

If you used it in HO, why are you worried about O?    Didn't you have to crawl on the big HO layout too?

Realistically, the same type wood structure you use in HO should work in O assuming you stay away from building with styrofoam sheets as they do on some modules to keep weight down.   They are usually small and narrow, so do not have to support any weight.

You will need to put cross members on about the same spacing as HO to avoid sags in the roadbed.

You might want to consider an around the walls design vs island style to get more square footage in the same room  or area.

I used L-Girder for my current layout. If you want to see it, click on the link in my signature. On my plus side, you need fewer members to achieve sufficient strength with no sag, it can be easily scaled up or down size wise (for large or small layouts), goes together very quickly, and is extremely strong. And as mentioned above, I got the book from Lin Westcott along with a book from Jeff Wilson. I highly recommend them both. Good luck with your build John.
