Overland Union Pacific U50C

Does anyone have experience with this model, it did not first run and it makes a lot of gear noise so I took the model apart to see what it looked like. I checked everything and used this grease Swiss made and the noise decreased more than half, this grease are used in clocks with fine gears. A belt transmission to the second fan was unfortunately not a option because it was broken and I don’t have them, the other one works. I don’t know if this a popular model for railroaders of the UP because of the gearbox also the same where the first run of gas turbines (Big Blow) from overland the same noise gearbox. Maybe someone has fix this with a hole new drive system I can do it also but for me is it a model I like it as the way it is weather it of course so you not see the damage paint any more.

I also did in the fuel tank isolation stuff because of the noise it worked a little but all together with everything I done the noise is still there if you go fast but not on slow speed. I bought this model years ago with damage (paint) and also not a airhorn on the roof. It drives now better but I think a whole new drive is the best. They only made I think one run of this model.

Model all together again the noise will also gets higher just a large sound box but I like the U50C and thanks Overland did this one in O scale it’s big.......

These OVERLAND models are very nice and very detailed but are extremely poor runners. The SAGAMI can motor pictured in your model is one of the worst piece of junk available in the train market. Their gearboxes are not much better, either.

You could try replacing that motor with a 8xxx series PITTMAN or contact Jay Criswell and go for the ultimate propulsion system that he designed for these models. It is not cheap, but you will be happy with the results.

Thank you Yves I will indeed it doesn't drive well at all and the noise I tried with grease honestly it's actually really junk this gearboxbut the model is worth to change it all, thanks again for the information.

Overland Big Blow 30

It was in the planning for a long time, finally now some time to tackle this turbine I know on my forum this one you seen before but now disassembled because it also had a gearbox problem like the U50C not so bad but some noise. I bought this one a few years ago but I think it was never run before was completely new. This time it works about the grease I use, the motor is gigantic never seen that large. What I do like is all the hoses between the turbine and diesel unit that is a lot what you see on the pictures but not every hose is on it have no more unfortunately. I tested it with all that in turns and yes they stayed in place of course there will be also a airhorn on the roof it was in the box silver but it must be yellow on the cab. If I go to weather this one I don't know yet I like it as the way it is now.

On the front I did a air hose with a chain like the rail one. the front window are actually too big on this second run model the first run was more better.

The connector hoses between units ads immensley to the realism and appeal of the locomotive.  Here's wishing that becomes the standard for all models going forward........alas, but a trickle. Key is promising complete hose connections on their announced next import, Santa Fe 4-8-4's.

Yes indeed the hoses gives models more realism I hope that future models have there hose connections between the locomotive and tender😀

Funny that you are working on your Big Blow Turbine. I actually started working on mine a few days ago. I have the first version, which is a monumental piece of crap, from a running perspective. Details are not too bad, but extremely fragile and not up to the second version (that you have).

I am transforming it completely, changing everything on the running gears and on the chassis. Major endeavor....I am not sure I will get to the end of it. If I do, I will try to publish an article in one of the O scale magazines.

Interesting I had the first run number 18 I believe also a picture on my forum but I sold that one really a very bad runner I’m curious how you transforming your turbine hope to see some pictures and I will buy that O scale magazines about your Big Blow😃

Ed, I've never heard of the 2nd run turbine (1993) having any running issues, except that they were under-powered for really long trains with only the "A" unit powered. Agree with you that the grease in the gearboxes could be solidified. I've owned several of these over the years (#18 bought new in 1993) and would like to find another one.  OMI advertised that motor to be 1/10th HP when the model came out and Tom thought that would handle just about anything you could put behind it, but with only 6 axles pulling, the motor never met its full potential before wheel slip.

One of the best O scale models OMI ever imported and equal to any brass turbine in any scale. Stunning.

Up 148, I meant the sound of the gearbox and pretty noise, unfortunately that is on mine I also have number 5 second run and that turbine runs really perfect and yes one of the best they made and beautiful painted I like them very much. I’m a big fan of Union Pacific turbines.

Edwin,

I noticed you live in Amersfoort. I have been to the Dutch Army training ground there, also spending time in Etten-Leur, Breda and Woensdrecht (along with the big cities and other places) when I was in my teens, many years ago.

I desperately want to get back there someday. It's a lovely country and fine people.

KOHS, Union Pacific 9000 Late Version

I like to share this one the 9000 late version from Kohs 2-12-4 it is a 3-cylinder locomotive and everything works and a sound system but almost impossible to run on my layout because of so many wheels but this model is high quality brass model super detailed and it runs very quietly. This is one of my collection brass models I never run with it only now for the first time in many years out of the showcase to do some pictures hope you like them.

Here's my KOH's 9000.  Fantastically detailed loco. But, it still remains a display case model as it requires a 90" radius curve to run on.

UP 148, Wow beautiful I like the weathering did you disassemble the 9000 for the wheels? I have a good look at that difficult to take it apart if you compare it for example a Overland model but for me is it also a display case model I thought some day to weather this one but I think better for me as it is, yours is perfect😀

No Ed, I wanted to have the DCC control and sound system changed out and some damage to the turret door hinges repaired. It was discovered all the wheels needed to be re-gauged.  I hoped to be able to run it on 72" radius curves, but I'd have to butcher the frame, so that won't happen.

Yes, it's a very complicated loco and one I could never take apart....I left that to an expert. Here is a photo of it dismantled....something you don't see everyday.

Wow....that’s what I think not do but you had a expert 😃 I don’t have someone who can do this if I have a problem with a Kohs engine or installing DCC. For me is it DC at the moment.

@up148 posted:

Yeah, way beyond my comfort level.  I didn't know this 9000 would run on DC, thought it was DCC only with the Dallee system installed. Learned something new.

All the Kohs engines runs on DC only the Challenger is DC and DCC the big boy I heard will be only in DCC. The sound system is not bad on the 9000 unfortunately with batteries with a control unit for lights all the Kohs locomotives except the Challenger.

There is a time to change things so I have decided to remove part of my layout to make a service facility for my turbines, some examples of real railroads see pictures.

I have for a long time this model from Overland double track tower service center unpainted to use for my new facility to built. I will painted it in silver and the lights on top of it have to work that will be awesome.

The pictures under is what it is now and will be gone soon because all this will be later the sand facility.

For a long time I was looking for the propane turbine from overland (very rare) hope to have it soon I hope...those pictures is not mine turbine. Pictures if I have it will be soon and that model is one of my reasons to change my layout.

This looks like a cool project.  Looking forward to seeing your progress.  You have some fine looking engines.

Gary is the best! That's a thing that still lies ahead for me in the future. I convinced a Sunset 4-12-2 to negotiate a 72" curve in P:48

It's possible but you need maximum lateral movement of the axles. I think it's still possible with the KOHS frame. Look at the last pic how much of a curvature the wheelbase has to cope with! I love the nines!

Sarah, I saw earlier that you were working on your 9000 looks very good and nicely weathered do you have more pictures? My 9000 remains as it is now, what you have done is perfect I do not dare this on a kohs engine, overland or psc is better to do.

Sarah has created a masterpiece with her 9000.  I've seen and heard it run and it's magnificent. I don't possess Sarah's abilities so my 9000 will remain stock.  Even the prototype hung over on yard curves and turnouts, so we can't expect the model to do any better.

I may pick up a Sunset 9000 and rework it. I had one when I got the KOH's and sold it...should have kept it. Kohs 9019 & SS 9000 002Kohs 9019 & SS 9000 004

I tried to do it on my yard impossible to run it but indeed the real one was hung over on yard curves but it is a impressive engine the 9000. Sunset did a very good one also that’s the unpainted one I believe.

If I may, I post some more pics here. Thank you :-) I wish I had more time for modelling, at the moment I don't get a lot done. The next engine on the workbench is a KTM 4-6-6-4 that will be super detailed and equipped with two individual motors and sound decoders. O scale is so rewarding!

Overland Union Pacific Propane Turbine 57

Finally after a long month I have it, this one custom painted bij Overland is completely new it runs perfectly almost silently but no lights. I know a lot of yellow but I liked it  In time I do the hoses between the locomotive and tender and more. This version was a dream of mine and I looked for this one for years.

Yes indeed very rare took me years to find those. Yes I hope Sunset consider the turbines😃that will be something the last one (overland coal turbine) was about 20 years ago.

Beautiful propane turbine. I recently acquired an OMI custom ptd standard turbine and the paint looks just like yours and is one of the best painted turbines (except the 8500HP) turbine models I've owned. Whoever Tom used at that time was fantastic. It also has the addition of new u-joints and is the smoothest running tank drive turbine I've own........a first on both accounts.
